How do you keep opossums out of coon boxes ?? I tried everything. I place wood logs in front of bucket sets. The possum moves the wood logs. I use bucket sets & conibear boxes. But I always place a heavy object in front hoping the possum wouldn't be able to move it, but they do !
It seems I catch 3 possums to 1 coon these days. But I'm only looking for coons.

That's trapping, possums are always going to find a way to plug any set
X2 All you can do is thin them out of the area first.

Consider setting dog proof traps on both sides of your foot traps. I do it all the time. 10 yards is plenty. It works really well if you are trapping a trail or two track road. Plus it is fun to drive up and see a coon, a opposum and a coyote all lined up.
You can also increase your pan tension on your foot trap to 4 pounds at least. This will reduce your non-target catches a lot.

Also know that you are helping the turkey, quail, pheasants, etc with every nest predator you catch. You are doing the ecosystem a favor.
Another tip is to set more traps at each location. Maybe make a dirt hole with a scent post 5-10 yards one way and a flat set 5-10 yards the other way. If the hole doesn’t get him (or a nest predator gets there first) maybe the coyote will circle and run into your other sets.

Good deal, congrats! You on the southern or northern end of Short Tract? If that’s what your name is referring to……

Haha, never come South if you don’t like possums. You could find tracks of nothing but coyotes and cats and put in a set and next check will be a possum waiting on you. Warm wet nights are guaranteed possum catches. I look at it this way, you’re taking out a nest predator and I’ve never seen evidence of coyotes or cats messing with them. They may get the pinky possums when they emerge, but I haven’t seen them mess with any possums in sets and I have pics of coyotes and cats walking by the clogged set, lol.

I've heard many people say that coyotes kill possums but I'm not so sure. They might kill a few but possum remakes are not known to be coyote catchers and it seems they would be if coyotes like to eat possum so much.

Bait has a been a factor for me. Meat (fish, muskrat, deer, beaver etc.) draws both coons and smiley's. Early season I have used fruits with moderate success of avoiding opossums. Have used fresh coyote meat with success too. If it taints (all coyotes are born with green bellies LOL), opossums will work it. The best approach is to find an opossum market for 2.00 - 3.00 (taxidermy or skull) and make gas money prior to Losing money on finished coons LOL. .....................my experience...... the mike
