I came here for this question because most people treat coyotes like rats and wanna blow them in half. I wanted to look like they were struck by lightning and have a hard time finding a hole.

I won a contest and I can have any short action rifle caliber I want in a Blueprinted Remington 700 action, with a Kreiger or Bartlein Barrel, Bedded in a MDT XRS Chassis (or equivalent price-point chassis/stock).

This will be a dedicated night hunting coyote gun and max distance of 300 yards. All tripod shooting. currently I’m limited to factory ammunition, but that could change

I’m looking into 22Creedmoor, 6Creedmoor, 204 Ruger, 6arc, 243 and 224Valk… let me know what you would do if you were in my shoes and feel free to recommend other options as well.

243, but only because I like that caliber and have already developed several good loads w my other 243 rifles. I have no experience with the other calibers you listed, sorry.

223. Great ammo selection, very good to that range, not too much worry of ricocheting, real easy to shoot, plenty of stopping power, and so on.
Maaany will work. If I had one purpose for a gun as you describe, that’s my choice.
Disclaimer, I have a couple .223’s and do not use them for coyotes, I’m not hustling any favorite.

A .222 rem is a great coyote round. But .223 is also tough to beat.

243, use it on other stuff too

This will be a pure coyote gun

Tactical.20, can be loaded to 4375fps or 4100fps

.22cal, take your pick of chambering.

Out of those mentioned I’d go with the .243. Too many folks want to go with the least possible caliber then complain about coyotes running off and never found. Yeah a .22LR would kill them, but when calling you don’t always get or make the perfect shot.

.243 is a moose/caribou rifle, .223 is a great all purpose cartridge. If it was purely for coyotes and fox I'd go with a .204

In a bolt gun its hard to beat the 22-250, and sub 300 yards, a .223 wouldnt be a horrible choice either, especially for a non-reloader.

6mm Creedmoor is pretty nifty though. And gives a guys some top notch longer distance options. Same for the .243. Only downside to the 243 is youll likely be required to go to a LA or to use drop mags to utilize some of the VLD type bullets.


The only reason to do a 22 Creed would be a specific desire to shoot heavy .22 cal bullets. Which for sub-300 yard shooting isnt needed (in fact, is kind of stupid). And if you're wanting to shoot some extended ranges, you're better off going to the 6.

The 22 Creed really doesnt impress me. When compared honestly and apples to apples to the 250, its external ballistic advantage is really quite marginal. At great expense of throat life, and component/factory ammo availability.

Only reason to do a 224 Val would be if you're married to an AR platform.

If it’s a 22 cal, the 22-250 is hard to beat. Have tried various others and nothing seems to beat it for DRT coyotes.

223 and 204 which is a shortened necked down 223 are mini actions nothing wrong with that just nor really what was asked

as cool as 6mm creedmoor or 22 credmoor could be I think I would stick to the 22-250 and the 243 , for availability of varmint ammo

there is a little 6 creedmoore varmint ammo out and there will likely be some eventually in 22creedmoore something like a 68-70gr vmax could be interesting

it would really come down to how far are you going to shoot

the creedmoore stuff runs faster twist barrels for heavier bullets , that generally go just a bit slower it is meant to be supersonic at 1200 yards where the lighter but faster bullet will fall sub sonic sooner , but are you going to shoot coyotes at a half mile , probably not.

some 75gr 243 is cooking at 3580fps going to be a bit like a lightning bolt to 300 yards

if you sight in with a 250 yard zero you are 2inches high at 150 yards and 2.5 low at 300. not much math to worry about there is it inside 300 , range few things when you set up and when they cross that 300 line let them have it.

this is why 243 is so popular for yotes

22-250 or 220 swift

.243 gets my vote, handload to your favorite bullet. Packs a little more punch if one dog hangs up a good ways out there.
