A quick fire latch job and maybe a leaf or two, better than carrying a bunch of stuff to keep track of Keep it as simple as possible

I was using foam underalls and they worked great for me for years but for some reason FnT decided to make them thicker so in my opinion it added to much tension to the pan. I used polyfill before that but didn’t like how it got everywhere after a catch. Now I’m using the colored polyfill in OD green and I think I found what I’m going to stick with. I used a 50/50 sand/peat moss mix inside the jaws and cap with a light coat of native soil to blend in. It’s been working perfectly.
We usually don’t need wax sand in Texas but I’m pretty sure after 36hrs of sub freezing tempts I might have traps frozen down tonight and in the morning.

I trap in the South and normally do not have to worry about hard freezes like the Yankees do…
With that said, I have tried almost every pan cover/underall imaginable and I always go back to keeping it simple…dried peat moss inside the jaws and over the pan. One handful for a #2 size traps and 2 handfuls for a #3. Native dirt is packed around jaws and sifted over the top of the peat to finish the set. Only problem I run into is raccoons poking around it from time to time. I think they can smell the old grubs inside the harvested peat.
As far as drying peat, I normally buy a block of peat in the Spring and sift the whole block into big plastic tubs. I place the tubs, lids off, in my attic over the entire summer. The peat will naturally release the moisture and will be bone-dry by fall.
Hope this helps someone.
