First you have to get him to come to you when you call him. Then play with a ball. Tease him with it a bit by shaking it in front of him till he will chase it. After he picks it up call him to you. Say drop and make him release the ball. Pushing a lip on his teeth works. You want him to play fetch not keep away. Some dogs need force training. There are you tube videos.

My dog will come when called if she has a toy but she drops the toy and runs to me when called

I like to start in a hallway or other enclosed area, get a wing or similar, something real fun to chase and flap it around then toss it, dog should chase and grab it, then pull the dog back with a small check cord, make it fun, lots of praise. Do it 3 times max, keel it fun, quit while the dog still wants to do more, don't wear the dog out fetching

How Olds the dog?

One way to train them to bring to hand is to simply quit throwing it, just sit and watch TV. If they bring the ball back to hand throw it again. If that doesn't work you're going to need to look into forced fetch

I used to train dogs for a good part of my income. When starting to train, you always want to make it hard to impossible for a dog to not do what you want it to. A check cord, which is basically a, long leash, is the best tool to teach the dog to come. Keep the dog on the check cord. When you want the dog to come say "come" and pull the dog to you. Eventually the dog will come as soon as you call. Never give a command you can't enforce until your dog is fully trained in that command. When the dog performs correctly give it praise and affection. Never call the dog when you are going to punish it.

Once the dig comes everytime you call it, start training it to fetch. Get the dog excited about what you want it to fetch. Throw the object. Once the dog grabs the object, give the come command along with "fetch". If the dog doesn't immediately return, pull it in with the check cord. Praise it and take the item from it.

Always end training while the dog is performing well, before it gets tired.

You also can do force retrieve training, if you need to, using a raised plank and suspended leash on a zip line, but its unlikely you will need to.

Find yourself a copy of Richard Wolters Game Dog. It will have everything you need to create an excellent retriever.

Eh...wot?

Definitely recommend this book. I used it and Water Dog by the same author for my Golden. It works amazing if you stay consistent with the training.

Force breaking gets constant results. I like the results and have had a lot of dogs I had bout that had been forced broke. But it's not something I want to have to do. I won and placed in several of Nstra field trials with my bird dogs over a few years. I had some of the best dogs I will ever have. My main male setter was a 4x field champ and #1 in the state for a while.

I do miss running dogs but don't have the time to invest to have good ones let alone great ones.

A well bred retriever does it naturally. It's fun to watch an 8 week old pup bring back whatever you toss. They just have it in them.

Force breaking a dog will be painful for YOU AND THE DOG if you care about your dog.

Get a super long lead like a clothesline and throw something the dog wants. Make it come back and then reward it with something better. Then constant and uproarious praise!
Throw a party when it gives up the item

I have found that positive reinforcement works best
With many creatures

My grandpa used the Richard Wolters books to train his Golden. She was so good at directions that when he gave her a line to follow, she would follow it no matter what. She was even told to go off of a thirty foot cliff into the ocean on SE Alaska once, and she dove off without a second thought.

In the words of Richard Wolters, “A treat makes his bowels work, a kind word in the ear makes his brain work.” Try it, you’ll be surprised the results you get!

I have trained some fine duck dogs and have always used the Wolters book "Water Dog".

My wife wants me to wear a bracelet that belonged to her grandfather. It says, "Do Not Resuscitate".
