I don't know you, and there are no easy answers, but I'm weeping with you brother.
For Sarge: A Lament
I remember the first time you came for a ride
And the joy that we shared as you sat by my side
All the paths that we wandered
And the questions we pondered
Of an evening near gloaming
We’d set about roaming
And explore every hollow
Our freedom we’d follow
You’d hoot and I’d holler
And if I had a dollar
For every laugh that we shared
But that’s not how we fared
The good times have ended
Your trail through darkness has wended
The path that you tread I can’t go
Where you’ve gone now I just don’t know
Beautiful friend where are you?
We brought you home in swaddling clothes
No greater joy a parent knows
To watch you grow in blissfulness
Your beauty and your loveliness
Like a shafted arrow you sped from me
The light of your eyes I cannot see
So quickly you passed
From me to the grass
Now I sit alone
Your name engraved on this stone
Weeping now in emptiness
My heart is filled with loneliness
Beautiful child where are you?
Like blossoms in springtime
Brought to life in the sunrise
I saw my life made in glory
Sought to write my own story
I saw my enemies yielding
To the strength I was wielding
A life filled with peace, with healing
And good times revealing
But the flowers all have wilted
And my hopes were left jilted
Forlorn by the altar they lie
Are all good things born just to die?
Beautiful life where are you?
They say that God from above
Gives His light and His love
To us, so we can abundantly live
Well, if this is your blessing, what gives?
Where is the light that you brought?
Or the love that you taught?
Have I not lived as I ought
To see my life brought to naught?
My hopes and my dreams and my loved-ones are spent
Was this your intent
For the son that you sent?
Was it the Veil or my heart that you rent?
Beautiful God where are you?
