Finished tapping today. Got the last 90 or so taps out. Wind is cold!. Two larger operations that we take sap to are all tapped but feel it won't run much until next week. These two places do over 2,000 trees total. Our estimate is about 830 taps out. Now to get my one 4 wheeler repaired be fore the run starts. It is now a weather related business.

I only have 21 taps out here in central Iowa but only collected one gallon in 5 days. Since there is a storm coming, I pulled the 10 taps that were the farthest from home. Today several trees started to run, and I got 6 gallons of sap. If the storm isn't heavy, or if the snow melts soon, I will go back and reset the taps. Last year I got 21 gallons of sap with 4 taps so I hoped to increase that . I wonder if the lack of soil moisture has something to do with the slow production of sap. Anyone got any ideas? You can tell that I do this as a hobby and end up giving most of the syrup away for Christmas.

We have not collected yet. Don't know how much it ran today. We have some weather coming so we will see how that impacts the trees and us. They are projecting rain for our area at this time with as much as a foot of snow 150 miles north and west of us.

We have most bukets with about an inch in each bucket, maybe 10% have a gallon in them We will go around and dump all of those out as the trees are not "running" yet and we don't need some bad sap in the pails when they do run. Does not look like until later this week before our season gets rolling. The two places we take our sap are waiting as well.

At least in Michigan, I would imagine it’ll start flowing better next week when we get into the 50s during the day and still those cold, below freezing nights.

I did some clearing at the property this past weekend and the Red Maple cambium layer has some moisture but isn’t flowing super hard yet.

Winding down here. Boiled 100 gallons last night. Probably another 300 to go over the next few days then I'll be done.
