There’s one for sale at the local gun shop thinking about picking it up who has one and what do you like or dislike about it?

Shot a lot of PD with one my Dad built on a Ruger #1 action. One of my favorite guns all time to shoot. Range is limited to about 150 yards on PDs.

The 17 center fires are the most under rated caliber there is. I have a 17 Remington and have played with them since the early 1980's. I shot a caribou with the 17 Rem when I lived in AK. PO Ackley shot every thing there was with a 17. The 17 HMR is a joke compared to the centerfires that will push bullets 3700 and up. I have shot coyotes over 400 yards with my 17 Rem. They folded up and never moved shot in the ribs. It is the top of the line for a fur gun. If you make a solid hit you never have an exit on a coyote and they go down where hit.

I don't have one but go for it! I liked the 17 Rem back in the day and have a 17hmr now to play with. Still like the 220 swift.

If you lung shoot a beaver with a 17 rem and a 25 gr Remington HP you het a 17 caliber entrance and no exit. The beaver does not move. It goes 100 % limp.

The 17 Hornet is my current favorite gun. Keep in mind that this is not wide open western space. Lots of places you cant see a great distance and there is no shortage of people or houses so a bigger gun can be more of a hassle.

Accuracy wise mine (CZ) will out perform any of the various rimfires I own and by alot. It can be reloaded to your preference also. It is good out to about 200 yards even in some decent wind on smaller critters. Most fox/coon type critters will not have any exit and it generally anchors them fine. Downside is that it isnt a longer range gun or the best option for bigger critters. For me it has basically 100% replaced my 22 mag and 17 hmr rimfire use. The only time I use rimfire now is as a trapline dispatch gun

I currently use a 17hmr with no issues. Mine are pretty much shot all in the water so head shots. Only reason I plan to switch is Inherited from my grandpa a bunch of 17 hornet ammo and brass and want to get the gun setup that he was never able to. Too bad he didn’t have the gun too lol

I use a 17 HMR regularly, almost every day of the week and I can tell that it will do more than what most people give it credit for. Just like ANY rifle, you need to learn hold over on longer shots and learn how to hold into the wind.
Just like with ANY rifle, lethal hits are dependent on shot placement. That is the shooter's job.
A 17 hornet would reduce the holdover and likely how much to hold into the wind.
Rather than share stories of lengthy lethal hits at extreme distance made with the 17 HMR, I will strongly suggest that a 17 hornet would far exceed 200 yards for a lethal hit. The shooter just needs to do their job.
I bought my 17 HMR in 2002 when they first came out. Early on, there was a problem with split casings, causing dangerous squib loads. At that time I began looking into going with a 22 hornet instead of 17HMR, but soon enough, the ammo manufacturers solved the split casing issues, so I stayed with the HMR.
Now, I am interested in a 17 hornet to stretch my distances without as much holdover. I'll need a new safe though. I can't squeeze even one more rifle in my 2 safes now.

I had one built on a cz 527 before cz chambered them of course. Lilja barrel. Beautiful little rifle-fabulous fox gun. Like mentioned above I am sure it would be great on beavers as well. Couple guys up here use them calling coyotes and are quite successful-but I am thinking that a great fox gun but wouldn't be my best choice for coyote size animals. Super fun to shoot-like no recoil. Very cheap to reload but get an inline seater if you are going to reload as the little bullets are hard to load if you have fat fingers lol. Now I have shot a lot of .17 cal centerfires an still do and .17 rem is definately king-absolutely stones coyotes with a vital shot with no exit and they are DRT. But back to the 17 hornet-its a fun cartridge to shoot and definately has its place to shine above the HMR.
