Today they are a deep-fried potato based dough.

Fausnacht translated from PA Dutch to English means “Night of fast.” Also called Shrove Tuesday it falls the day before Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of the Lenten fasting period.

My one Grandma was Dutch.
I did not get much back history.
I got along fine with her brothers but there
seemed a cultural (good word choice) riff.
They did not act like folks do on here lol.

My father’s side was a long line of strict Deutsch, very religious and set in their ways. I suspect there was a break in my lineage from the Amish church several generations ago but it is not acknowledged in family history.

My mum’s side are a bunch of drunken Irishmen.

No need to be redundant sir. You can just say they were Irishmen.

They pronounce them punchki's here, not correct spelling. I think it's paunci, something like that.

Stores here always put fresh Amish made donuts on the counter where ya can't miss them!

Do alot of the Amish go fishing on Ascension day in your area?

I haven’t noticed that hippie. Picnics are big on Ascension Day, so are potlucks. Amish schools and businesses are closed.

I have spent a lot of time studying my family history With the help of a few of my cousins we have gathered a ton of info about our ancestors All of my family going back the last 4 to 6 generations are what are called PA Dutch They where a very tight knit group And they where consistent in following their traditions I have found the following to be true They came to America so they could have freedom to practice their religion But quite often they where not very religious
