The 17 center fires are the most under rated caliber there is. I have a 17 Remington and have played with them since the early 1980's. I shot a caribou with the 17 Rem when I lived in AK. PO Ackley shot every thing there was with a 17. The 17 HMR is a joke compared to the centerfires that will push bullets 3700 and up. I have shot coyotes over 400 yards with my 17 Rem. They folded up and never moved shot in the ribs. It is the top of the line for a fur gun. If you make a solid hit you never have an exit on a coyote and they go down where hit.

Going to be the next gun I get. Plan to use it for beavers If you lung shoot a beaver with a 17 rem and a 25 gr Remington HP you het a 17 caliber entrance and no exit. The beaver does not move. It goes 100 % limp.

Not like you need a reason to buy a new gun. WHAT? When did this change? I never got the memo.

It goes 100 % limp. I currently use a 17hmr with no issues. Mine are pretty much shot all in the water so head shots. Only reason I plan to switch is Inherited from my grandpa a bunch of 17 hornet ammo and brass and want to get the gun setup that he was never able to. Too bad he didn’t have the gun too lol

I use a 17 HMR regularly, almost every day of the week and I can tell that it will do more than what most people give it credit for. Just like ANY rifle, you need to learn hold over on longer shots and learn how to hold into the wind. Just like with ANY rifle, lethal hits are dependent on shot placement. That is the shooter's job. A 17 hornet would reduce the holdover and likely how much to hold into the wind. Rather than share stories of lengthy lethal hits at extreme distance made with the 17 HMR, I will strongly suggest that a 17 hornet would far exceed 200 yards for a lethal hit. The shooter just needs to do their job. I bought my 17 HMR in 2002 when they first came out. Early on, there was a problem with split casings, causing dangerous squib loads. At that time I began looking into going with a 22 hornet instead of 17HMR, but soon enough, the ammo manufacturers solved the split casing issues, so I stayed with the HMR. Now, I am interested in a 17 hornet to stretch my distances without as much holdover. I'll need a new safe though. I can't squeeze even one more rifle in my 2 safes now.
