Working on a couple rats from HobbieTrapper. Gained insight a little too late with my last project. Tanning requires you to remove the membrane. It took me a little while to get a feel for it and a method but you can see the bottom pelt has had the membrane (or saddle??) removed. I used a hog scraper and I have a fleshing board specifically sized and shaped for muskrats.
Nice way to spend an extra hour of daylight! After dinner maybe I’ll try to get the other one done

Just make sure and wear gloves.Had a friend that decided to tan deer capes that he was mounting. After doing it for around 3 years he became really sick. After being in the hospital for a while they found out it was from him handling the tanned hides so much.I`m not sure of what method he was using.

Aluminum isnt a good thing to get in your body if you use alum or Lutan F, both are aluminum. So PPE is a good idea. Course that goes with a lot of tanning chemicals.

I've always found it harder to get as good of results with aquatic animals as compared to land animals. Anyone else notice this? Even with muskrats.

I think people underestimate the grease in muskrat fur so they don't degrease them properly and scared of over fleshing and not breaking the hide for fear of cutting/ripping.
