We will likely hit bottom 3.5 years from now. Jump in then.

no one can time the market ever. Best results are dollar cost averaging in every single study I have looked at. Always be buying regardless of if it's up or going down. Long term you win.

What type of 'something else' are you thinking that would have been a wiser choice?

I have a while to go, so I like it. I'm buying while it's on sale.

Well the s and p had averaged over 10% the last 80 years. A simple low cost s and p index fund your money should double on average every 7.2 years. Yes there are good and bad years and better and much worst preforming investment.

Saying stock market is very broad.

I ssure don't like a down market or losing capital but it was good time for us to move funds with losses and minimal gains into a 4.5 % money market fund in preperation for partial payments on our condo we need to build as my wife is not able to navigate steps and stairs well at all. Even after the two knee surguries, the pain is at least gone but the mobilty and strength is not coming back.
Did note that our SIN stocks such as tobacco, etc. are doing very well which is almost always the case when consumer confidence and attitudes along with anxiety increase.

20 years ago would be great.
But if your time machine is broken, just divide what you have to invest by 10 and put 1/10 in each week. Or each month. Whichever you prefer. Just pick one and stick with it.
If you did this 20 years ago, you wouldn't care now what week or month you bought in. And 20 years from now, you'll only care that you did it. You won't care what day you did it.

Who predicted interest rates at record lows for 14 years? Nothing like that to make stocks value grow. Competition for investor money will cause the gains in the market to grow slower, if rates stay normal. JMHO. Sub inflation interest rates are not normal.

P.S. The Fed printing 5-7 trillion dollars and buying low interest treasuries and mortgages wasn't normal either. If things return to normal........

Millions of options traders would disagree with this post, but you have proclaimed yourself as the be-all, know-all, tman financial guru, so who are any of us to speak against your words of wisdom?

I claim no such thing. you on the other hand and typical nasty and add nothing of substance to any thread.

Someone asking when to or how to time the market is not spending his days reading company financial info and market trends and is not likey to do so. even Warren Buffet says investing into a low cost index etf is what's best for most investors. I guess Warren Buffet must not know what he is talking about but a waitress or bar tender sure does . Heck you don't even know how to educate yourself and maximize your tax codes. But like with your ignorant coments about my geting a tax refund I'm sure you will crayfish when other chim in supporting what I'm saying. I guess you will never learn and like being corrected.

So if you have nothing but negative and pointless things to say when you quote me you could do like you said don't actually do and not comment on my post.

But obviously that is beyond your ability.

Anyone that denies the current market was manipulated by the Biden administration is blind or just ignorant. Biden’s second year was a disaster for the market. False reporting and influx of printed monies surged the markets. Multiple investors were baffled why stocks were trading as much as 70 times dividends. When 10-20 times was considered great paybacks. Record profits corporate greed along with consumers debt keeps the economy pumping. But as long as consumers keep paying high prices nothing will change. For good or bad

Oh yes, please "correct me" PF, I long to be like the wife you have tied up in your basement! crazy

Warren Buffett style value investing is great, and also what I'd recommend to anyone just getting into investing, or investing NOW for the future, which is what you are doing! I do it too!

But, someone asking how to time the market, does not in any way indicate that they're not watching the markets, or that they will not in the future. I know this, as I was once one of those people. I agree that it's impossible for anyone to "time the market" as in knowing where the bottom, or top is..... but people time the market every day, and make... or lose... a lot of money in doing so via options and futures.

In case you haven't noticed, not many on here support or defend you. And I ain't a waitress, or bartender. I'm three classes away from having my Bachelor's in finance. But carry on... I'm sure all of tman is waiting with bated breath for your next snippet of financial advice.

Yes government spending and the low interest rated drove the markets high and they have been overvalued. The correction is long over due. I thought it would have started a few years ago. I thought there was no way they could keep going up, Proving I was wrong and had I stopped investing I would have missed out on back to back 23 and 25% returns. I also tried to time the market this year and I bought to soon. What to know when a stock will drop just wait untill I buy it. So now I'm down for the year on most things not all but down overall none the less. I'm glad to see the markets down now I'm not buying at near record highs each week and when it goes back up I will make more. There have been 16 recessions in the last hundred years. Pull backs are good for the markets and where money is made.

In 10 years this pull back will be nothing. If your at or near retirement age and need the cash and don't have time for a recovery keep what % you need in safer investments. myself I have 11 years minimum and will be throwing all I can every year but moving a % into more conservative investments as I get closer to retirement.

It's a plan. But I have never had any thing go as planed in my life and this is not likey to either. But it's working so far and the same plan that had done well for countless others.
