Man those are beauties! The big one I put up yesterday was thick & heavy dark, but the guards aren’t like the ones I got a month ago. Maybe this old warrior was just a bit unhealthy. His teeth are really short, couple healed scares in the back, but his tail wasn’t nipped. Also probably ran into a front catch foothold a few years ago, arm healed at the wrist with fur all grown in.
I have quite a few like those surprisingly. It was a very interesting year here for me.. I shipped some of my better fox to Idaho with claws on and between this area producing so many dark beavers I can say I think I’ve caught some of my nicest fur ever including when I lived up north trapping Pa., nj and Vt. Still have rats beaver and fox to get put up.
April is autism awareness month. Nearly 1 in every 100 children are born with an autism spectrum disorder.. 1 in 100. Stop and think about it...please
Way to do it Shakey. Sounding out runs is tough to do. I like to go mark them pre season right before freeze up with a medium sized dead stick. If you do it too early they chew it off and put it on the lodge.
BP. Catching beaver under ice is a workout and an adventure anytime. Only the very beginning and the very end of season in my neck of the woods can you set open water. And not much big river or creek trapping. Small cricks and ponds are the norm around here. A lot of back woods tromping, hiking and heavy hauling. But love it lol. Next season I'll be back at it. No matter what the market is paying

I try and mark the ones I plan to trap, but most are inaccessible until freeze up. Dave was saying that he worked hard for his beaver when he was younger, until he learned sounding and got himself a couple good tools for ice. He said it doesn’t have to be that hard. I laughed and told him “Yes it does Dave, unless I can hang with you for a week on the ice! The sounding is trial and error until you get good at it.”…..lol. Sound, chip a hole and see if it’s a run….repeat. He doesn’t even use bait. Sets right on the run usually with a swinging Susie type rig just hanging an inch or two off the bottom or tall stands. Usually a run on each side of the feed pile and sometimes one right in the middle. That’s where the big hook tool comes in handy, cleaning a spot for the set. I’m trying to get STA to get that 1/2 hour video onto YouTube somehow, it’s a beauty!

That's the trouble I usually have, I can't get out to mark runs until there's already enough ice to make it difficult to find anything.
That's where the hard work comes into play.....lol. Once you know how a run sounds, you're set. The one or 2 main ones are pretty easy, it's the less used ones that they'll start using after a few members get wacked. I the deep bush, I don't want to clean out a lodge anyway.
I trapped a lot of beaver in SE where we have open water all winter (usually). Somehow they aren't as fun to target through a few feet of ice, so I only make a few sets a year now
Trying to get an idea what a rare gulo gulo ( wolverine) would sell for I am getting this one mounted as a full wallmount, what would one Sell for skinned and boarded, tanned, and lastly mounted?
