Spring time pintails are as cool as it gets in waterfowl photography. We are covered up in an insane amount of birds right now as the migration is kicking in.

One of the springs I lived in Montana I came across a flooded cut wheat field and estimated over 50,000 pintails in it. To your point, they are such a cool looking bird. Probably never see anything like it again.

No sheet water this year, hopefully we get some moisture soon or there won’t be much of a hatch this summer.

I met a waterfowl biologist in Nevada years ago who said that a lot of hen pigtails die during mating season because there are too many drakes per hen. Between the endless courtship flights and being bred endlessly they don't fare well. His opinion was that more than 6 or 7 drakes per hen isn't good. They aren't as sturdy as mallard hens but for me they are tops on the table.

They are the first ducks to nest in the prairie pot hole region. They like to nest in sparse grass. They are often the first ducks I see in the spring. Great pictures Tray.
