The United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (also known as HEW) was a cabinet-level department of the United States government from 1953 until 1979. It was administered by the United States Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare. In 1979, a separate Department of Education (ED) was created from this department, and HEW was renamed as the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

So Danny it existed when we went to school. It was just not it's own entity. This is why we are so ignorant. smile

Who operates or runs these "local systems"?

The State along with the local GOVERNMENT.

Teachers, unless its a private or charter school work for the GOVERNMENT.

Public school means Public employees.

Public employees are GOVERNMENT employees

I honestly cannot speak on the DOE. I can speak on kids not being able to read or do math but boy could I ramble. lol
Kids as a whole eat garbage compared to the past. Thus greatly affects learning. They can thank their parents for that. Kids as a whole go home and stare at a device of some sort instead of reading a book or having minor conversations involving numbers. They can thank their parents. Kids as a whole get way way way less parents support than they used to because mom is busy with Facebook and dad is busy with YouTube.

In reality, schools are like 5.5 hours a day , the kids with good parents succeed generally and the ones fighting against all odds because of their crappy upbringing succeed as the exception and not the rule. DOE, no DOE, that isn’t changing. It’s amazing how many people blame kids or teachers that spend a fraction of a day with a kid but don’t pause to consider how the lack of intellectual challenge in their home or the neglect at the hands of media affect them.

St Louis County in MN wants to have school 4 days a week instead of 5. They would add an extra 1/2 hour to each of the 4 days. Adds to what you are saying.

It's not always about catching fish. That's what people who don't catch fish usually say.

DOE is mostly dealing with colleges not so much with elementary and secondary schools.

If parents raised their kids correctly, there wouldn't be any indoctrination.

You mean like a 2 parent home with mom staying home to actually raise the kids?

I do outdoor education programs in schools from time to time, and I suggest anyone volunteer and sign up to be a substitute teacher in a classroom to get a real idea of where our education system is headed.

well said

Doesn't have to be that. Plenty of two income households with good kids. Plenty of single parents with good kids. Just be involved with your kids and their education.

Yet teachers try. My daughter turned 18 before graduation. A few teachers tried to convince her to vote for Hilary and this in a school with a senior class of about 60 kids. Some teachers are very much political activist, guard your children well.
As for the Department of Education it definitely needs to be eliminated. There is no need for that middle man in education and never was. Just a money pit the tax payer funds.

I saw a text book that actually said - The native children were allowed to leave the Rez and attend school. They were allowed to speak English and dress in white man’s clothes and they liked it. !

My grandson corrected the teacher commenting she needs to study actual history. I don’t think even the best parent is prepared for that level of stupidity.
