My question is how to start so you don’t get patterns in the wall,,,,

Wrong,,,, you start from the top so mortar does not drop on the stones below,,,, if you want to save on clean up time……

I built a house about 20 years ago, put something like 70 pallets of that stuff on it. Took about a year doing it after work. Had to sell the house because the ex wife thought it was an ATM. I did all the work she cashed in on all the equity. I put bucks county dressed field stone on with a mirror joint showing. In that year I also layed a semi load of building blocks. My fingers where raspberried for the whole year I think from all the mortar

When my camp was built, I watched the stone guy do both fireplaces. Yep, started at the top.

Been laying stone for 50 years, personally don't like lickum and stickum stone's!
We get the amish to cut real stone to the same thickness,and use them.

Put some plywood on sawhorses and start building your puzzle there on the plywood
Then just transfer it to the wall after it has been prepped

Same here, we used to install a lot of thin veneer real stone. One of the very popular varieties were called thin mountain Marys. They were real stone but still lickum and stickum.

If you take some time and have some skill you can make them look like real structural stone (except on the corners). I see lots of applications where it looks like the masons just stood back and flung them at the wall, completely randomized and looking as fake as can be.

OK it looks like your pattern is 3,5 8,maybe 10 inches high!
Measure your stone heights,and snap a chalk line @ each height across your wall
you can then lay your stone making sure you don't have a vertical or horizontal joint
over 2 feet. I hope this makes sense! if your stone hits any of the chalk lines,and a little
imagination it will look good. Measure form your finish top down!
