My old Massey 44 has a resistor on it. The owners manual doesn't show it having one. It was probably switched from 6 volt to 12 volt at some point. One wire goes from the resistor to the coil. The other wire goes from the resistor up by the key switch/instrument panel. Can someone tell me where it goes and why it's there?

It goes to the key switch and supplies the power to the coil, voltage has to be reduced otherwise the points will burn out you can eliminate the resistor if you buy an internally resisted coil.

If you owned a Dodge back in the day, most people had a spare one in the glovebox, lol.

Heck Hippe we all had a spare distributor all set to go, we did not change the point or condenser we just swapped out the whole thing, a lot faster......jk

I carried a resister, condenser and can of wd40 in case the cap got wet, lol

When the key is in the "start" position, full 12V is provided to the coil. In the "run" position, power runs through the resistor to provide reduced voltage to the coil, to prevent the points from burning up.

If you install a points conversion kit like a pertronix kit, they usually require full 12V so the resistor has to be eliminated..

Ford back in the day used a special resistor wire that had some amount of resistance built in to it, instead of a separate resistor.

I have a key and a push start button. The resistor wire goes to push start button rather than on switch?

Wire from push button to start goes to starter solenoid, key switch should have a wire to resistor.

Most of those resistors drop from 12 volts down to 9 volts. Test the voltage while the engine is running.

is that the part i use to charge up and hand to unsuspecting folks and it would knock the pee out of them. I remember what it looked like, moreso what it felt like. sure had a lot of fun with em whatever it was.

That would be the condenser you'd charge and lay somewhere. It kept the people who like to fiddle with your stuff think twice!

^^^This^^^
When key is in start position resistor is bypassed to give the coil an extra shot of juice to start the motor.
When key is is run position resistor is inline (series)with coil to be kinder to the points. Less arching and easier on the condenser..
