Salmon don't start running till June, so I thought I might spend some time in May catching a few Muskrat (since they're the only thing open in May) and thought I'm make a couple colony traps with some mesh wire I have. Wondering if you guys have a prefference of box vs funnel. I hear box is easier to stack but is there anything else to consider?

I like the boxes myself.Like you said easier to stack high and side by side in the bigger runs.

I like these type funnel traps it depends on your laws and the set ups you have to work with.

Just curious. They must have a section that opens up to get the muskrats out?

The first thing to consider is do you have muskrats? If you are catching one in a colony or funnel you may as well be setting a 110. I have box colony traps and like them for my area. They are collapse and can be carried and stored flat. I have 24" long and 36" They are pack full at times, but most my runs are not big enough to take a larger trap. To me the big advantage with funnels is you can make them as big as the run is wide. I think if you have rat runs a foot wide they are the way to go. I seldom see a run over six inches wide, so the collapsible work good for me. I like running them under clear ice in the fall just thick enough to hold me up. I ware hip boots because the water is shallow most the time. In the spring when the wind comes up they pack full of weeds at times.

Yeah I've been catching muskrats in 110s but it looks like there's enough to justify making a colony trap or two. Speaking of I haven't trapped this lodge at all yet cause I've been mostly doing blind run sets and I've stuck all my 110s on other lodges. [Linked Image]

Reach in and grab the head and pull them out is the easiest way. Some have escape guard cover doors over the inside holes to prevent escapes.

the funnels work good at culverts, round ones, the squares ones work good in marshes and box culverts,

If you have 2 bodies of water across from one another and a culvert going under the road the funnel traps really shine, even with the bigger culverts by putting them in the bottom a ways in from the opening will also take muskrats. Even though they could just swim over the traps some instinctively dive down to the bottom to get through the culverts. A hook on a pole is helpful with placement.

They work in old underwater den openings also or the bigger runs when you come across them if they are deep enough for them. The square ones shine in the deeper runs that a 110 might not cover as well, a little vegetation above the door is helpful like a “dive stick” setup.

Smaller bank holes and shallow runs wet or dry I like the 110s for each trap has multiple uses depending on what you have available to you.

Majority of the DOT under road culverts here are 18-24”. So I have 18 to 12” funnels made from 1x2 mesh that I zip tie to each end of standard 12” funnel colony. As long as trap body is submerged good to go. A little work is needed to clear sediment from one end of culvert but I do that scouting season.
