Anyone got any insight to how the tariffs will affect the fur trade. Specifically the North American fur auction this June?

Looks like Canada is off the 3 page list for now except for a few things like semi conductors……. And I don’t know why they don’t just call them truck drivers… crazy I guess it’s a “train” on the highway……
But everything’s very vague, which is normal for any government.

Not to be political, but that is what I was thinking too, what market? If rats go from $2.50 to $2.00 it is not a real big loss except on paper. Coons too, going from $5 to $4 just means that now they are selling for the cost of put up, but not even catching them. The real negative thing about a long term down market is that the longer it lasts the more other options fill that void and it will take longer to establish a market. We had lengthy low markets prior to the fur boom.

As of yesterday, GFW here says no tariffs of fur…….as far as they know. They did move their fur south in January just in case though.
Take it for what it’s worth, the governments don’t even know.

It’s going to be a hobbyist’s market because the prices won’t even pay for gas.

That being said, if GFW sells thru its Cambodian showrooms, the cost getting it into China won’t be a significant factor.

People with money are going to buy, regardless. People who want it to look like they have money will buy lower priced fur garments because fur ‘looks’ good. People who buy for warmth, do it because they have to. There will still be a market for us. The question will be, can we find it?

Not sure about southern Minnesota, but generally your state put out good fur. $3-$30 coons are everywhere, beaver are everywhere. I got no problem getting over $20 or $30 (1 half-decent spring beaver or a big arse silver coon) of fur to cover gas in my Sierra 5.3 every check in the early spring beaver/coon season. Now it getting a bit late and the fur is starting to tank, but early on we both got good fur. Good grades, proper put up and most of my fur winds up in North Bay. Dave from GFW around here was paying fair dollar too. But there was guys dropping off tainted junk too, could smell the hair falling out……lol. Those are the guys complaining about fur prices around here……but I guess in the old days the junk paid too.

Spring coon season? No such thing here, the fur is (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) yellow, springy, and worrthless by February. I am all ears to learn how that does not happen a few latitudes north with the same species. Honestly have never heard of silver coon here beyond January, but I am always learning.......

It’s in the fur chapters of the big bible. Not sure about Pennsylvania, but I was replying to Teachers comment about hobby trapping. He’s in MN which has nice coon…..at least northern MN they do. I’m at the shack right now so I’ll take a pic of that page of the bible when I get home.
There’s no hobby trappers out here that I’ve ever met, but we all enjoy what we do.

Minnesota produces giant raccoon in particular central and west central but the color is not the best overall. From my understanding the highest quality coon in North America come from the ‘golden triangle’ of southeast Mn, southwest Wi and northeast Iowa. Other pockets exist such as northwest Iowa etc. a fur buyer explained to me years ago about the guard hair density and so on that the giant coon to the north don’t have. However, In today’s market square inches win.

square inches, good under fur and the right color! There was a $5 difference for us this year on 4-5xl high grade fur that were the right color.
