I don't mean to be an ole arseloe but people don't need to scan my driver's license to know if I'm old enough to buy an alcoholic product or ammo for that matter. Sorry, 1) I don't look anywhere near 21 and 2) I don't know where my "data" is going when its scanned.
A new C-store chain (I think they are out of Wisconsin) has arrived in my metro about 2 or so years ago and its just down the street from me about 4 blocks. Overall, I like doing business with them. I planted some shallots in my home garden tonight and decided I want to get a tall beer for the end of the work week. The nice, well-groomed young man asked me for my DL to prove that I wasn't under 21 and I said, "Do I look less than 21"?
He said, "No" but company policy was to see proof of age.
Ok, I dug out my DL and showed the front where it says my year of birth. He took it and started to scan the code on the back. Sorry, that's a trigger for me and I quickly took my DL back. I said, "You don't need all the information that's on my DL to prove my age" (or that I was actually in this store buying a beer).
He was a bit miffed but didn't push it any further.
This is not the first time I taken my DL back from being scanned for something that need to be 21 to buy, such as ammo. All they need to know is that I'm 21 or older. They or anyone or any entity they may give that scanned data to doesn't need to know that it was ME that bought that item.
I suspect it won't be the last time. And if their management insists they have a "right" to scan my DL, then I will politely tell them I have a "right" to spend my money somewhere else. They already have security cameras capturing almost everybody's image when inside or just outside stores. If the Administrative state wants to track my travels down, they can probably do that with enough manpower. For all I know, this C-store chain is making $$ selling my scanned DL info for beer buying to insurance companies so they can jack my rates. As we have recently found out (but actually old news), the DNA testing companies sell your data to about anyone who has a checkbook.
Enough 1984 already but in reality, its probably just getting started...

I went to the bank today to deposit some checks. The teller says right aways my drivers license is expired.
She didn’t enter in any checks or anything, just pulled up my account and spews out that my drivers license is expired.
I stared at her like what the flying … is going on here! Then she says oh no never mind, it’s not expired yet. Few more days till expired.
We carried on with the deposit and I left.
That ticks me off, you know.
Like what, I need a drivers license In order to deposit money into my account?
People and the system are ticking me off.

I have upset lots of folks for refusing to disclose my SS# including my insurance agent. More than one DRs office. Like you I dont give out DL info. I make my living with mine.

Hang tough folks. Its an easy act of defiance.
It make get a lot tougher in the time to come.
Best wishes JP. You all up there north are feeling the heat first. I don't think the Canadian government is jailing people for posting memes and other free speech on social media, but the motherland (the UK) and much of the rest of the EU are. So much for "democracy"...

100% onboard with the OP.
No scanning my license to sell my data without my permission. Lost sale. Not coming back either.
I had a CVS employee ask for ' Proof of age ' to buy a cheap lighter. Being snarky I asked if they wanted to see my AARP card. The employee said it was corporate policy.
I left the pack of lighters right there , not buying them. Told the employee to let corporate know they lost a sale and many future sales because of that policy.

Beginning May 7, 2025, if you plan to use your state-issued ID or license to fly within the U.S., make sure it is REAL ID compliant I wonder if Prez Orange Man is cool with "REAL ID" or is it just flying under the radar from the DS of the past few years? I don't plan to fly until I go up to your home state Dirt at the end of the year to help my Army kid move back home after his 2nd tour ends. But I'll have a passport by then because we will have to drive through Canuk land to get back to the rest of the USA. I better get on that passport thing and then my "REAL ID". What blew me away working for the federal government (with all our background clearances) is that "they" never automatically put us in the TSA "fast lane". That was all on us to do and I never did it. Get to the airport early enough and its not that long of a wait. I don't think I ever waited more than about 20 minutes in the regular line going through a major airport. Maybe I just got lucky.

Few years back the wife wanted to go to a craft shop that's 40 miles away because her daughter got her a gift card for there. So I'm sitting in the truck waiting for her and see a Dick's sporting goods store and have never been in one so I walk over to it to check it out. I got the , this is a soccer mom's place vibe right away from the displays but managed to ring the gun dept. I found a brick of .22 shells for a fair price so I take them to the counter. This is where it goes sideways. First, the guy spins around a doodad that looks like a credit card thing. I said I'm paying cash. He says questions will come up for me to answer which I don't and spin it back around. Him thinking I did I guess, then asks for my drivers license. I just walk away shaking my head. All for some .22 ammo, go figure.

Get some matches shipped to your house. Ridiculous I have been in Walmart buying some Walmart age restricted things like carb clean , brake clean , spray paint. Walmart allows it's cashiers to make the call to verify your age or 'card you' if they are unsure of your age. I pass the quick eyeball test every time and cashier makes the call without asking for ID. I have zero problems with that. I guess Walmart employees have at least 3 brain cells and can think independently from their corporate overlords. Good for them.

We should all start to ask them for theirs, pull out a phone and take picture of it.
If they ask why, tell'm if you get hacked, they're the only one with your info.

Speaking of present times, I was in a variety store the other day for some two-bit item, the cashier rang it up; $7.04. So I hand him a twenty and 4 cents. He says, "we don't take pennies", I didn't think I heard him correctly and said "what?". He repeated himself. I said you've got to be kidding (he would have had to give me back a penny in change regardless). I grabbed the 20 out of his hand and told him to keep the 4 cents since he probably needed it more than I did. Has anyone else heard of this happening?

No real ID. Flying before deadline. Coming back after. This post saved me from an incident. Packing my passport. I wonder how many incidents will happen? Dirt, EVERY post on Trapper Man is both educational and informative.
