I've read on here how people use sandbags or feedbags as weights was wondering if anyone had pics of how to wire them up so that they don't come open once they are full of sand or rocks?

What he said.

I use them when weight is an issue. Hiking in, trapping out of a boat or canoe. Sand and dirt/mud has a way of bleeding out of bags, especially if you have some current. It’s not much of an issue in slack water but I’ve pulled up bags filled with sand or mud because nothing else was available and sometimes they’re nearly empty after a few days in the current.

Trail cameras and fresh snow have broke a lot of trapper’s hearts.

I boat trap so I don't need to make-do on weights. I like to use window sash weights. About 10-12 lbs worth does the trick usually.

The poly sand bags I bought on Amazon for cheap came with strings on them to tie them off. Works good, as long as the otter can’t reach the sack. lol

Yes, if you’re using wire in some manner just run it through the poly fabric, it’ll “heal” itself. I’ve used those bags when making TE sets under bridges and just run the sharpened end of my rerod trap support through the bag. Pull the rerod out and the hole will “heal” itself. The bags are made of the same poly material that some of our bean farmers use and when the inspector shoves his testing tool though the bag to retrieve sample beans making a pretty good size hole to get beans out of, yet, the poly closes itself.

I think this setup would work although I’ve never tried it.

To keep a critter from reaching the terminal end I pound on a stop two feet up from the end on all my drowning cables. Especially important for situations like this and if incorporating vertical terminal rods.

I just close it with wire. I twist the top of the bag, wrap it with wire a few times, and twist the wire tight

Tie a knot in them if they are big enough, then attach your drowning wire/cable below the knot. That is best, but if your bag isn't big enough to fill with enough weight and tie a knot, do as AK Tramp says, often times I will run the wire through the bag a couple times and then wrap it around.

Also, if you are trying to cut weight on walk in sets, think about cutting long drowning stakes to attach the bottom end of the drowning wire to on site. This way you don't have to pack anything in but an ax, which I always carry beaver trapping anyways. I only use weights if I am in rock bottoms where I can't drive a stake, or if I am beside a road or somewhere that I am worried about theft and don't want a stake sticking out of deep water to draw attention to my set, otherwise I like stakes myself.

I trap beaver on two rivers where it is predominantly mud. There is some big flat shale rocks around but not much. They have somewhat sharp edges. I use rods most of the time and they work great. You run into trouble if the river level is slightly high. It's shallow for a short time and then gets deep fast. Tough to get the rod at the right angle. If I do use a sack I put the rocks in the bottom , give it a twist, then push the top down over the rocks. It essentially doubles up the bag where the rock edges are. Works but takes time. Luckily most landowners are alright with me bringing in rotors and hiding them nearby before the season. When your killing the beaver for them they are happy to accommodate you.

Couple wraps around bag then back through a couple times behind your first wraps, make sure wraps are tight ,leave loops to secure your cable to.
