The missus just returned from visiting family in Alabama where she got pulled over for a single burned out bulb tag light, the car has two of them, and got the third degree on ID to include his grandchild my daughter who was not driving.
Maybe Dad is paying attention after all.

Seems southern states are more unfriendly to out of staters. Mississippi and Georgia especially from all the things I've heard. They really don't like us northern folk.

No, we don't. Stay up there.
Planning on it, but your welcome to come this way. We like everyone (except people from Illinois). LOL

Does anyone else remember this movie series on the subject?

Anyone who would give an 83yo woman grief over a license plate bulb has probably done a lot worse to others in their time on the job
From someone who works on cars a lot , marker lights (licence plate lights) are probably the most overlooked lamp to check when checking your lights to see if they are all working. Very easily missed with one out of two working.
Cops know this. They use it as a tool to pull someone over and go fishing.
What are the cops going to do when the bulk of cars are replaced with newer models equipped with LED bulbs with a much , much lower failure rate ?

It's called a pretextual stop. It's a stop based on a legal, but minor, reason, like a license plate light, but the real reason for the stop is to "investigate" (go on a fishing trip) for bigger crimes.
It's how cops stop drug traffickers on the interstate a lot of times. They get a tip (a white honda from california will be hauling50 pounds of fentanyl) and when the white honda goes past, they pull them over for something minor, like following too closely. Then in the course of "casual conversation", the stories don't add up, which turns into probable cause to search the vehicle.

Several years ago, I was at a sportsmen board meeting that took place in a local bar. After the meeting, I was stopped by a highway trooper. He said he stopped me because I was driving erratically. Then, he asked me how much I had had to drink? I truthfully told him one can of Sprite. He asked what was in the Sprite? I told him ice. Next, he did the thing with pen I was to follow with my eyes without moving my head. Apparently not satisfied, he wanted me to do the heal-toe walk. I told him I had poor balance and drunk or sober, I would fail that test.
I asked him if he had one of those things you blow into for me to try? He stared at me for about 10 seconds and asked me when was my last traffic violation? I told him when I was 18, I got a ticket for illegal mufflers. He told me to go sit in my truck while he ran my driver's license. He came back, handed me my license and said I was to watch my driving in the future.
I can't help thinking he saw me come out of a bar and that was the real reason for stopping me. My wife was with me and had no idea of what he considered driving erratically.
Got a photo from a speeding camera in the mail. I immediately sent it back - way too expensive and really poor quality.
