Law Dog OP trapper Joined: Dec 2010 Central, SD	Looked at my elms trees the other day looks like they must be bugged lots of holes in the trunk and limbs but I’m not seeing woodpeckers in any numbers doing the damage. In my firewood I’m finding hornets deep in the bigger rounds and what looks like flat looking mealworms with pinchers. Still blooming but the years will be few for a couple trees by the house. No surprise the trees in area the elm and ash have been dying off for years now a great time to own a wood boiler. Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that! Jerry Herbst

080808 trapper 0 Joined: Dec 2015 NNY	Snowy is correct. Elm here dies and stays upright for 30 yrs without falling. This can be good and bad. Makes decent, not best firewood. Tough to split.

Saskquatch trapper S Joined: Dec 2006 Saskatchewan	We got pretty much completely wiped out here. Once it shows sizeable dead branches, it will be dead by fall. The tree will literally be hard as rock when you cut it down within the same year it dies. We've found, once you cut it down, it will quickly regrow all around the stump, and that will also succumb. Mother nature is a strange gal.

GREENCOUNTYPETE trapper G Joined: Sep 2013 Green County Wisconsin	I don't know as much about elm , with ash you want to cut them before they fully die and have a couple green limbs left they will stand for years but they can get to where they will drop dead stuff that can take you out while you are cutting watch carful and keep your hard hat on America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

KeithC trapper K Joined: May 2009 Champaign County, Ohio.	If it's insects and not Dutch Elm disease killing the trees and you want to save them pour imidacloprid around the drip line of the trees. The roots will take it up and it will kill the insects feeding on them. You can also inject it into the phloem. Keith

When it succumbs, cut a chopping block out of the trunk, and it will give your years of good hard chopping. PS: the elm beetle lives just under the bark, however, once the trees are infected, its game over as far as the eye can see.

Northof50 trapper N Joined: Dec 2008 Manitoba	elm beetles are in the cambium layer just under the bark, the fungus in their tunnels is what stops the flow of nutrients the round holes are from Cerambycidae beetles, they take several years to mature.....the wasps are parasites that have drilled through the wood to lay in the larvae....they have 5-6 inch long ovipositors to do this. the circle of the exit hole tell what family of beetle it is, some are round some are oval

They that die off year after year self thinning the shelter belts my neighbor has lost about 2/3 of the trees he had 20 years ago a handful at a time. No saving the one in the photo the base is rotted it’s never getting better will just start some new trees it’s about time to replant the holes in the tree belts. Wright Brothers trapper W Joined: Dec 2006 Pa	In late 80s the elm beetles were thick in Pittsburgh. I worked alongside an arborist who saved one large elm that was owned by a horticulture guru. I burned elm wood, the guru burned money.
