What are everybody's thoughts on the .22 WMR? For my smaller caliber guns I have several .22LRs, a .17 HMR, and a couple of .243 Winchesters. Do y'all think that a .22 WMR would be a good, practical gun to add to my small-caliber arsenal? Does anyone think the .22 WMR is overkill for meat hunting rabbits and squirrels? How far out could you take down a 'yote with it? What brand, model, and action do you prefer?
Thanks,
Zach

Its my go to "walk in the woods" gun. I think They work fine on rabbits/squirrels and give a better chance at larger game in a hunting setting. 100 yard coyote is probably pushing it, I wouldn't purposefully hunt Yotes with it but I've shot a couple with mine. Theyre not as accurate as .22 LR, that's my only complaint.

They are great for raccoon calling, that’s their best application IMO but they will kill anything you shoot in the right location. Your 17 hmr will cover pretty much anything the .22 mag will, but you should always buy more guns. I’ve had several.22 mags, the Savage A22 mag is my current favorite. CCI maxi mag HP are great with it IMO.

Here my 2 cents worth. WMR is fun. Never got into the 17 cal thing. Agree not as accurate as the 22 cal most likely limited WRM ammo. Overkill on squirrels. Probably. I head shot squirrels with my CZ and loose a front leg at times. Heart lung shots are a mistake. It’s fun when I get bored with my 22 lr . I could see were it be great on raccoons would put them down. I would not hesitate getting another one if the CZ falls in the river. I shot groundhogs with 22 lr but would prefer a 22 WMR. Never hurts to have another gun

I have an old 22wmr marlin bolt action. I would like to know how many groundhogs and squirrels I have killed with it over the years

I agree with this. I'd say it comes into it's own as a groundhog gun out to 150 yrd or so. Some are very accurate, CZ and Anchutz, BIL did very well with a CZ .22 mag for coyote hunting. But then he was hunting forest with a caller so shots were under 100 yrds. Little small for for coyotes for me anyway.

Shells are 30 cents a piece where .22 LR are 8 cents a piece. They're fun though.
For sure, they'll mess up a squirrel. Even the solids.

If hogs are a possible, particularly dispatch in a trap, the magnum beats a LR. Likewise for dropping a beef.

YouTube reviews surprisingly good.

Very light and very ugly

Tried a handful.of different brands and weights and it REALLY likes Hornady 45 gr CD.
At 50 yds, getting dialed in

22 mag. I have killed numerous hogs to 240 lbs. not head shots, but behind the shoulder. They run about 75 to a 100 yards. Killed quite a few at 100 yards. Get you a .22 mag handgun, also.

I like the Marlin 22 mags so well that there is a loaded one by every door in the house and garage. All wear a 2,3 or 4X Leupold. It is fun to watch critters come apart in the scope.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I have used 40 grain solids for 35 years on everything. Head shots only and no hollow points on small game. I never bought into the 17 cal thing.

No hogs around here (at least I hope not) but I do have a .22 mag revolver

I currently don’t have a 22 mag although I have over 30 boxes of ammo for one so I’m sure there is one in my future. My last 3 were a Marlin tube feed 783, CZ452 and an Annie.

I sold/loaned all 3 to neighbors and/or friends. The 17 HMR is superior in my opinion and my two CZ 452 regular take squirrels at 100 yards or a bit more.

The 22 mag may hit harder but the HMR is more accurate in my experience.

Thanks, yep my .17 is super accurate too but it's just so explosive on squirrels, and it seems like it would be a little light for coyotes out past 50 yards

22 mag hollow points will leave you with 4 feet, a tail and a red mist over about 12 feet.
