And they arrived this afternoon. Now to see how long it takes for them all to go inside. [Linked Image]

I don’t get the correlation between the title and the subject. How did you “scout “?

Yep i can see that. It was actually bees that scouted it out. So I added "They" to the title.

What is the yellow disk? I have a cotton wood I think would be a good place to trap bees. Twice I have seen a swarm of bees by a hole in it. I wonder if there were bees in it at one time.

Yellow disk is just an entrance for a bee box or trap that can be rotated open or closed or to vent. Lemongrass oil or artificial pheromones that mimic a queen are used and can lure in swarms.

Yep the disc is just a rotating entrance, you can leave it open either the small or large hole, use the slotted one to keep the queen in, or the small dots to block them in to move them to a new location. I baited it with a little lemon grass oil and a frame of old brood comb from one of my other hives.

Yep prime time here too, there where some early swarms but the first week of May is the best for us. Have 3 other traps out on powerline right of way where we deer hunt. Gonna check them this weekend. This was a massive swarm, there were at least as many in the box as there was on the outside.

Went ahead and got them in a hive box last night and put a feeder on them since they were calling for rain today and tomorrow. They must be happy because I came home to them doing orientation flights, and my wife they had been doing that most of the day. They will get moved to our bee yard this weekend. [Linked Image]

Its a swarm trap it holds 5 frames inside with some extra space below. It provides what researchers have found to be the prefered amount of space that scout bees look for. Now swarms move into smaller spaces and larger spaces but overall this is around the best size. Some people use 5 gallon buckets for traps, but I like being able to just move frames over to the hive body and not have to cut comb out of a bucket. Heres a picture of one that I based mine off of.
