Around here, people would debate whether that's a great plains rat snake or a great plains king snake. Both exist, but the visible differences are minimal. If you google for images of them, you'll find some images in both searches that look like that snake.

My son kept one as a pet for a year or so. Then we released it. Then a year later I was idling along on the ATV and heard a rat start screaming. I jumped off the ATV and started looking through the grass. I found that snake wrapped around a rat. Apparently the ATV scared the rat, which ran past the snake. Fun times!

Rats have bigger longer heads and big eyes, bodies are loaf shaped and muscular.

Kings smaller less prominent head and smaller eyes, body round.

I do miss fooling around with snakes... so many people to scare with them, so little time. No snakes to catch up here in AK.

I got bit a couple years ago by a milk snake about 3' long. Kinda felt like sandpaper, but left a toothline of bloody punctures. Painless. Had to peel his mouth off my hand. Beautiful snakes.

Yeah, just chop it's tail off. About an inch behind it's head.

Would have guessed rat snake laugh

Picked up a piece of firewood this afternoon and jerked my hand back. Just a harmless speckled king about 16" long

Had gloves on so would not have hurt me but snakes cause involuntary reactions in my body regardless of the type laugh

And no I did not kill it, hope it eats a few copperheads or water moccasins wink

Aren't there only two types of snakes?
Dead ones and ones about to be dead?
