Wish to put in new driveway over currently lawn. Too old and too cheap for pavement. Will go with crushed stone. Is there a fabric that can be placed over lawn so grass will not grow thru stone. What is name and where do you get it? We are organic so spraying is out.

You would think tree barrier would work the trick here I’d getting gravel or rock that’s not loaded with sand and dirt that’s a big help to keeping themweeds down some gravel brings in unwanted weeds.

My experience is that the weed barrier fabrics eventually work their way to the surface and become a problem. You'll be cutting a little bit of he fabric away year after year as it bunches up, rolls up, and sticks up through the stone.

I use a broad spectrum herbicide like Primatol once a year - do not spray under the canopy of any trees since this is where the roots are. But it will give season long control of all vegetation.

when our driveway was put in the had to put fabric over some of the heavy clay soil as the crushed rock would just sink into the clay as you drove over it.

They just called it "landscape fabric".

To do it right you should remove any organic topsoil. Have it excavated down the subsoil, then stoned from there.

I'd go with millings instead of stone. Packs well, easier to plow snow. Much easier on a snow blower. And nothing seems to grow through it.

What's millings? And where do you get it?

Get some geotextile for road use and excavate the native soil to 12-24" and add your stone,millings or RCA. This will give you a real long lasting driveway.

I'd be speaking to your local Conservation District/Township Supervisors or other folks who have actually CONSTRUCTED (and maintained!) gravel roads.

Their advice would be invaluable; and could save you both time and money in the future.

Do not use weed clothe. Get an actual road fabric . Scrape of the grass layer and lay the fabric . It does not make a good base on top of the grass. Then used decomposed granite if you can find it. Best material out there for driveways. No dust , packs really well

Millings are the ground off asphalt when they re-pave the highway or other roads.
We have a local asphalt plant in town that we can buy it from.

Yesterday I was traveling on I-26 and watching the contractors prepare a new and wider lane. They were installing a black fabric under about 18" of soil. I expect this was a drainage issue.

Yep. Cut off 8" of soil. Put down a geo fabric. All suppliers have it now. Put down roughly 4" give or take of a clean rock maybe a 2" clean. Clean rock will never compact but you need to compact it in to your fabric. It will eventually lock together. Then do a 1" base rock cap wetted down and compacted.

Concrete might be cheaper, lol.

Gonna have to excavate to mineral soil, lay ty-par down, fill with crushed rock.

No way to do it cheap and right, lol, lots of ways to do it cheap and not so right....but thats your decision....

If grass is a problem, you need to make more home made ice cream. lol.
