Just like the question says. When I was growing up, I only ever had one pole, used for everything from bluegills to catfish. It was some Walmart special, strung with 12 lb line, and I thought I was perfect for all my needs. Now that I've grown and matured, I've got two poles.....a light one for bluegill, and a heavy one for catfish I know a guy that grew up using a cane pole for everything, and he seems to think it was suitable for a very fish out there. My kids have one pole each, too.

I know some guys have dozens of rod/reel combos, specialized for every situation out there. Is that really necessary? Does anyone just have one or two poles that they use for everything anymore?

Like you, I started with one "catch everything" rod..... over time, I am now in the dozens of rod/reel combos... It seems it just happens....😁

Now, I have too many fishing rods, but that doesn't mean I can't make fun of the wannabe bass fisherman with 20 rods strapped on their deck.

They're a wet dream for the outdoor marketing machine.

I currently have four rod set ups cause it's faster to switch poles than to switch the hooks around. But I can do 98% or my fishing with 1-2. But my poles are basically 2 categories: light and heavy. I can use 20lb test for any freshwater fish here, since there aren't any panfish, and 20 is heavy enough even for big salmon. My saltwater rig is 50lb test and I use it mostly for bottom fishing, which means a bigger weight and targeting mostly bottom fish like halibut.

My extra rigs are just 20lb test with smaller hooks and weight I use for fishing smaller fish in the salt water, and a ice fishing jig with poly instead of braided so it doesn't freeze as much.

I swap between heavy and light depending on where I'm fishing as well. 20lb is plenty for fishing the beach for salmon and 50lb is what I use in fast moving currents in the river so I can pull out the fish without risking them tying themselves up in sticks or logs.

Just saw this and counted 40 working ones n the garage. Some baitcasters for bass, spinners for crappie, cork rigs and penn spinners w ugly stick rods for catfish and saltwater. Gotta specialize. I started with cane poles and zebco 33s but theres always something better for each situation. To each his own but thats how i roll

But on the best Coast, you need lots of different gear.
From sturgeon to fly fishing lots of gear needed…

We have a lot around.... but I use 3.

A heavy one for catfish.... an ultralight for most everything else.... and a really LONG one for fishing crappie in certain situations.

I’m purely speculating at this point, but I would say I’m somewhere in the 60-65 range. I don’t even use them hardly. I dipnet salmon, I set a skate for halibut, and I use pots for shrimp and crabs (obviously) so I don’t really use a rod and reel much anymore. But I like to have plenty around for friends and family to use when they’re around

one I can think of for myself. the boys have a few as does the wife and daughter. Will likely be geting a larger variety of higher quality gear as I finally get organized and since I'm not working any overtime currently.
