I am assisting a friend’s son in selling off his Father’s estate. He has a bear trap, which belonged to his Grandfather whose name has been painted on the pan.
Based on what I have found on line and what is shown on the pan it appears to be an S. Newhouse #5 . The Pan Reads; “S. Newhouse Oneida Community N.Y. No.5.”
This would appear to indicate it was manufactured from around 1895 to 1911.
Overall Length 35”
Jaws 11”
From what I have read the springs should have a Newhouse stamp however, these do not appear to.
The springs are not as smooth looking as some of the images I have found on line appear to be. They appear to be hand forged rather than mechanically machined.
Any insight into this trap would be appreciated along with any suggestion of value.

He is located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I am not sure of the value in Canada is as great as it is in the U.S. Has anyone ever shipped these across the border? I can’t imagine there are any restrictions.

Phil,
Thanks

Springs replaced yes.
Really hurts the value.

Shipping that anywhere is a waste of time

Put it on a local auction in Edmonton and you will do as well as anywhere else. Look for a consignment auction that is on the internet

300$ would be fair price but at auction it will do 500 or more

Thanks for your response. I suspected the springs may have been replaced.
