Any wild turkey poult sightings this year? I have not seen any yet but will get some cameras ready this weekend. I have heard a of a few in Virginia. It has been an early year for bees (swarms in March and April), flowers, and birds nesting (baby bluebirds are about to fly).

See lots of hens no little ones yet that I have seen. A long beard in the back ground still trying to impress the girls though. [Linked Image]

I bet a pretty huge number of turkey nests lose all the eggs to predators.

I bet so too. I read some where that the % is very low that actually hatch and a low % survive the first 6 months.

I have a lot of hens visiting everyday for second breakfast, last year only two came with only a couple poults, and they disappeared too....It seems the nesting success is dismal.
Same this year, lots of visits but no poults....

I agree red webb that rain is hard on the poults. We had an inch of rain last night and it has been pouring for a few hours since I checked the gauge. We will probably get 2 more inches before it clears out. I hope they start hatching after all this rain. I worked hard reducing nesting predators, spraying grass herbicide and lightly tilling areas to provide good brood rearing for the poults. Thick grass areas are not good for the poults because they can’t walk and run through it. Survival is low for sure.
