what fishing line are you running and why ?
how often do you replace it ?
I run P-line Floroclear , the monofilament core fluorocarbon coated line around a 8-10 pound on most things , then I have a couple rods that I run braid with a fluorocarbon leader
the P-line mostly I replace every year if I didn't get out much I might go another year but I find it gets a memory sitting on a reel long term and then I don't like the way it casts.
the braid goes longer but when the waxy coating breaks down and it starts to fade in color I also find I get unhappy with how it casts.
before the p-line floroclear I ran mostly Mono usually trilene , I was buying a new combo at a sports shop and the guy was telling me about the p-line and I tried it , really liked it

On my trout rods I use a yellow colored mono string. I can't see the clear stuff anymore, lol. Slow to medium action.
Walleye jigging rods I use braided on a 7' fast action rod.
Same on Musky rods, only heavier.
Bay rods any cheap mono.

On replacing, usually when its getting low from busting off.
I use backing so I don't need much new when replacing.

I came here to say the last spool of good line I bought was P line and I been using it for a long time. Its prob 8lbs and all I use. I like that it is thin and strong but sill breaks when I need it to.
I redo my poles in spring. The ones that look like they are missing line and been used a lot. I doubt all of them get new line every spring though. If I used it enough that it needs changed, there is enough missing or a knot to notice that needs fixing anyway. good stuff , work it like mono but definitely stronger. I buy a 600 yard spool a year about and it does all the rods runs about 20 dollars online for a 600 yard spool Cabela's always seems to be sold out of 8 and 10 so I have taken to just ordering a spool early in the year Amazon tells me I ordered it Feb 14 this year and not try and get it from a store if they have it most of the time 8 pound is sold out. I haven't started that spool yet I was using up last years spool and got through the 3 I did with it this spring it is out now and the next one I need will be on the 2025 spool.

Trilene XL on everything I only front my spools with 60 yards on the trout rods, bass rods 100 yards I'm on my third front on my one trout rod since early April In a good winter small mouth season for me ( 3 months) I can change my front more than 10 times. But I'm running 4 pound at that time of year
do you run a heavier backer you leave on ?

do you run a heavier backer you leave on ? Yes I do Dirty fishing line lowers my catch rate, I clean the last 2 feet quite often if the water is off color Just how I've always done it

I have an old reel from when I was kid (early 60-'s) with the original line on it and won't change it till it's too short to cast very far.

I like fluorocarbon line for it's toughness and invisibility in the water. But it sinks and isn't the best option for slip bobbering. Leader only.

Keep poles and line stored in the dark if possible, sun is a killer on both.

I replace monofilament every other year these days. Used to do it annually but the rods just don’t get out as much as I want them to. I use Momoi High Catch exclusively. Braid doesn’t get changed out that often. I’ve got a lot on my bigger reels that’s hasn’t seen daylight since it was spooled. Bigger stuff I’m using Jerry Brown. Spinning reels I’m using JBraid metering. It’s nice when I’m jigging and trolling to know exactly how much I’ve got out.

Rods for big catfish and spoonbil have 80 pound pound powerpro. 50 pound trilene mono leader attached with a swivel. Get hung up I dont lose the expensive stuff. That thin powerpro the reel holds a lot of line. Channel cat rods rods for drifting have 30 pound powerpro and a 20 pound leader. Have a few with straight 20 pound trilene. Crappie bass baitfish rods have 8 pound trilene. Same with push button reels for grandkids.

I use 30 pound test spider wire on everything,,,, I replace it every year… I fish for catfish and that line gets beat up going through all kinds of debris.. you never ever know what you are going to catch using live bluegill as bait in the river.30 pound test seems to work well for me and I don’t loose very many fish

I run mostly Vicious yellow mono. Changed my crappie rigs twice already this spring. I can buy a 2000+ yard spool for $8. Fishing the docks and cables is hard on line, but the vicious has held up well for me the past 4-5 years.
P-line is tough line. The fluorocarbon can get pricey and I do still use 10 lb on a senko/ned rig or two.
On my bait casters for bass, I use trilene big game 20 lb.

I had tried Berkley Big game and it would not lift the weight the line was rated for
what I like about the Pline besides thin and tough is that if it is rated for 10 pounds , no problem tying a 10 pound weight on and lifting it , can even give it a shake and it holds.
the Big game I could get to 70-75% of the rating and it would break, my sample size was one 300 yard spool but I repeated the test with several knots and it failed repeatedly.
as I understand it lots of companies play with how the test must be run , I want to tie a common knot to a weight and slowly lift with a 3 foot section of line , that seems reasonable to me
saying it needs to be in water , or some sort of knot your not going to tie to tackle , or needs to be a longer length to give it more room to stretch , just seems like a cheat to me
simple test easily repeatable in any setting , weight , common knot , lift , or it isn't really strong enough and should be called by the 90% of break point weight.

Spiderwire Stealth braid... I reverse it on the spool when it gets a little frayed looking... I only put 100-125 yds on anyway and just use any old line for a filler beneath it.
