Here's a sitka blacktail from POW on a slab of yellow cedar milled there.

That’s a nice buck. I have a place in Thorne Bay. It was a rental for a long time, since I prefer staying in Edna Bay, but I’m staying here again since I have a bunch of work on POW, and I don’t want to boat into naukati everyday and then still have to drive

I always get envious of the timber in SE Alaska every time I go down there. So much better than the Lower Yukon.

Next time I go there to preach, I'll have to see if you're on the Island. I usually go there at freeze-up for the Lower Yukon (Slow time on the Yukon, good time for me to travel.), preach in Metlakatla, Craig, and Ketchikan, and sometimes other communities.

I know some of my friends in South East Alaska prefer yellow cedar over all others for firewood... not sure why.

When I cut our eastern red cedar I always get itchy, I hate cutting it. Does western red cedar have the same effect on some people?

Yes it does, mostly due to the cocktail of chemical compounds found in the wood. It is usually worse in causing allergic reactions than eastern red cedar. It is one of the top species that cause occupational asthma.

Eh...wot?

Well Eastern Red Cedar is a juniper so completely different, you rarely see one even a foot in diameter here...

It has oils in it that make it burn long and hot, that’s what I burn. Yeah, by all means let me know, even if I were at my cabin, I can get to naukati fairly easily and drive to Craig.

It does that to some guys, it seems to be mostly an issue for guys that don’t live somewhere with a lot of cedar? It’s never bothered me, but I have seen guys get little red bumps all over their arms and neck because the cedar dust burns their skin

I kind of liked western red cedar, until I milled a few hundred thousand feet of it by myself.

They’re just an overrated tree. My cabin is sided with it, so I can’t say it’s useless, but I hate cutting them

Speaking of cutting them, it’s high time I walked out the door to go do just that.

A friend of mine was hooking at a camp somewhere south and east of Ketchikan and told me they got into a stand of white fir. That was probably 35 years ago. The most beautiful tree I ever logged was a Western White Pine, 7 foot through and green which is remarkable because white pine blister rust has killed almost every one.
You would probably feel different about red cedar if you owned some. Worth a fortune.

I just had to add that red cedar...especially from western Oklahoma is my favorite wood for my turkey calls.

I've made a few from yellow cedar and it always smelled like pencil shavings, but it was from old fence posts.
