Last of the Generals to fight. He and Sherman were life long friends after the War of Northern Aggression.

Most of my relatives fought out of North Carolina units. A couple that had ventured west before the war were in the Union Army. Even at the time, there were family members on both sides.

Robert E. Lee would be my fave. A man of integrity. Highly respected on both sides. My Great, great grandfather was shot in the leg at Chicamauga (sp.). Had it not been for a row of corn he claims he could of drowned. After the battle as he lay in the corn field, a huge rain storm swept through. He claims he was able to lay his head on the row, avoided the water, until he was moved to the rear. He lived to age 95 and died in 1931. My grandfather lived with him until age 11. He remembers that bullet wound in his leg always oozed. Locally the heathens have removed most if not all Confederate Memorials.

So far all of the Confederate generals I ran through Family Search are related to each other, many different ways, but mostly through just the same few common ancestors. The Northern generals have the same ancestors. Many of the common ancestors were European royalty and admirals and generals for Great Britain. Most have centuries of military leaders in their pedigrees. I believe that is very good evidence to a strong genetic predilection for being a great military strategist. Ancestry.com actually can identify by your genes that you will perform well that way.

Genetics are fascinating.

Keith

Sad deal

He had to be one tough dude. He walked nearly 100 miles for training camp. Probably uphill both ways. And through a foot or 2 of snow. Another great, great granddaddy rode in the cavalry for the Army of Northern Virginia.

My dad (born 1910) remembers a few civil war vets in the 4th of July parades in St. Helens, Oregon. Oregon had vets from both the south and north. He said they always were at the head of the parade and rode in cars. Every year fewer until there were none. None of my kinfolk were involved as we immigrated in after the war mostly.
