Don Hoyt was the president of the NTA back in the 1970's, at that time the publication was known as The Voice of the Trapper. He was the editor of the magazine and the magazines back then were always full of news and trapping articles by well known trappers of that time. Hoyt increased the membership of the NTA significantly while president. He was controversial, I think he was a lot like Donald Trump.

I met him once. He “autographed” a copy of the booklet he wrote. I still have it somewhere.

Vacuum salesmen at one time I remember his haters saying that back then can’t remember anything truly negative about the man that was proven just politics mostly. Nothing against him but membership increase was probably inline with the boom years people were hungry then.

I remember him well, used to see him at what was then the Southern Michigan Trappers Conventions every summer.Always wonder how or why they got him out of the presidency,he was voted in then got black listed in the NTAs own publication.Definitely a black mark on the NTA then as it was never explained to the membership what happened.

I joined the NTA in 1980 and there were lots of articles and discussion regarding Mr Hoyt at that time. I was not a member earlier so I never really knew or understood what all the issues were and how they mpacted the NTA and maybe trapping then and even now. He was not the only controversial NTA leader and we may well have more in the future as it seems many organizations seem to cycle through phases and how much of that is mostly internal versus external is not always easy to determine.

I remember when he used to bring dozens and dozens of coyotes to the Southern Michigan Trappers Assoc. fur sale in Marshall, MI.
Very few coyotes were caught in MI back then. I believe he caught them in Arizona. He was also the President of SMTA before the NTA.

He published a short trapping book back in the day. Recall it was primarily about trapping in west. He was known as fox trapper here and went west—definitely Arizona but maybe other places too—-once snow started piling up here to chase cats and coyotes tgere. There are still few Tman old timers from here that would remember him and may respond. I believe he was president of southern Michigan association at very end of 60s and maybe early into 70s prior to Gary Dunlap being president. Towards end of fur boom a number of guys (6-7 that I recall) followed him to the southeast to trap in winters
