Earlier this month Canadian Tire bought all of the rights and branding, and now the buildings have been leased to a Chinese company. The end of the longest retailer business in North America.

People need to wake up when comes to what's being sold to China. Like 60% of USA pork producers are owned buy China. What s*uck is # of acres being leased out west to foreign country's to produce beef to ship over seas.

The Grand Old Company. Back in 1821 Hudson Bay took over the Canadian North West Company which had been their biggest competitor in the beaver trade. Earlier the North West Company had bought out Astor's Pacific Fur Company (under duress because of the war of 1812).

I've appreciated the journals and other written documents that the Company kept. A wealth of good reading on the western fur era.

Makes one wonder what will happen to all of the old records at the Hudson's Bay headquarters.

One would guess that museums or Universities will be vying for the material if they don't already possess it.

China, figures. At least they didn't vet the Branding rights....yet.

Hopefully more than 1 guy stands up to them.

There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.

I thought Target the retail store had bought them up in the early 80s and that was it.

Per wikipedia:

In 2006, American businessman Jerry Zucker bought HBC for US$1.1 billion. Following Zucker's death in 2008, HBC was acquired by NRDC Equity Partners, which also owned the upmarket American department store Lord & Taylor.[12] From 2008 to 2012, the HBC was run through a holding company of NRDC, Hudson's Bay Trading Company, which was dissolved in early 2012.[13] HBC's American headquarters are in Lower Manhattan, New York City, while its Canadian headquarters are in Toronto.[1] The company spun off most of its European operations by August 2019 and its remaining stores there, in the Netherlands, were sold by the end of 2019. The company was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol "HBC.TO" until American businessman Richard Baker and a group of shareholders took the company private in March 2020.[14][15][16][17][18][19][20]

In March 2025, the company filed for creditor protection under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act and began liquidating Hudson's Bay stores.[21] Two months later, the company's trademarks and other assets was sold to Canadian Tire, including its coat of arms.[22]

Seems like a downward spiral for the last few decades.

Well that stinks on ice, another end of an era. I still have a Capote made from a Hudson's Bay blanket, 35+ years ago.

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

I wonder what Canadian Tire wants with the trademarks? And wanted them had enough to pay 30 million for them.

They are pretty much the Wal-Mart of the North. I am sure the blankets will still be sold as HBC brand. Like Cabela's selling the Herter's brand.

That's borderline sacrilege.
