I stay out of the water since coon prices crashed WD. But there are a ton of pictures and catches in those sets out there. I'm sure someone will have some to post.

I've caught a lot of coon with them, but don't think I've taken any photos.
Picture a coon standing in water next to a metal stake WD, and you've pretty much got it covered. whistle

If exposed bait Is an issue, you will have to cover the bait.
I like to use a separate stake to secure the trap. And PVC pipe is the way to go. It gives you eye appeal and you have a place to place your bait.

This seems to be the gist of it. He is using drowners.........

http://thebeav.us/fall03/fall03.html#pvcA few uses for PVC. It could used as a fish stick set.

You make exposed bait sets like the video shows in this area and you'll eventually be an expert at releasing eagles, dead or alive.

Some river corridors here it is illegal to use bait that is visible to soaring birds. Easy solution is to stab a small (maybe 4x4 inch) piece of cardboard on the stake and push it down on top of the chunk of fish. Can also grab a handful of grass and wrap it over and around the bait.

From all I have seen and heard, those concerns are way overly exaggerated. It's possible, just not as likely as some think. I've personally never seen it.

Read carefully . . . "You make exposed bait sets like the video shows IN THIS AREA and you'll eventually be an expert at releasing eagles, dead or alive.

Got it?

In this area. That's southwestern Wisconsin.

I'm guessing you've got eagles down there in Iowa somewhere, but probably not at the density along the major riverways up here.

As far as "those concerns are way overly exaggerated" . . . you need to put more time in trapping than you do watching You Tube videos.

No nerve touched, just wouldn't want the younger trappers on here thinking maybe there's no problem with an exposed bait along a riverway set up like the video shows. There's a reason this set as shown is illegal in Wisconsin.

Here is another version of the story. This one shows how to cover the baits. As far as Wolfie is concerned, basic set is to place a highly attractive bait a few feet offshore, then place a couple traps in shallow water between the bait and shore. Water deep enough coon is going to approach it from shore, so walks into traps or steps on one while working the bait. Can be setup as a drowner or stake it on shore. The highly attractive bait used can be a chuck of fish as show, but if you have something equally attractive, use that. Have also seen guys use a piece of PVC pushing into water.....then a T fitting on top, with bait pushed back up into the T fitting. Out of sight, but still allowing air to vent and drift scent.

I've caught a lot of coon in fish stick sets, but I still think a pocket set is better.

That's why the PVC works since you don't have EXPOSED BAIT. But you still have eye appeal and a lured plug in the top end.
