The standard bullet grains for the .270 are 130 and 150. That's pretty much all you'll see in the store. The rifling in his barrel will work for these two just fine. The .270 can shoot up to a 170 grain bullet, but they are not common. Those loads are usually hand loaded by people. That larger bullet has a hard time stabilizing with the rifling in a .270. buy a good quality bullet in 130 or 150 and practice. He'll be fine

Nothing wrong with 130 grain bullets. I shoot 140 grain Barnes TTSX out of my 7 mag, heavy bullets aren’t necessary

There’s one way to know for sure.

Load a handful and try them.

I’ve seen heavy bullets shoot well in twists that were supposed to be “too slow” for them. Try em out!

170 grain Copper Barnes in .270 must be longer than a wagon track. Barnes hold together and penetrate deep. IMO no need to over think and change what you are using.

Clean traps,tight lines,straight shooting

copper bullets are are longer than the same weight lead bullet si ce copper is lighter than lead a d likely why they say you need a faster twist for the 150s when 150 lead core would shoot just fine.

I expect what your shooting now will have zero issue putting elk down.. Some guys shoot them with a 243.

On a another note it could always be another excuseto pick up a new 300prc or 338.

Going up in weight with all copper bullets means increasing the length of that bullet more so than if it was a cup and core type bullet.
that extra length needs a faster twist to stabilize them. All you can do is give it a try. Manufacturer knows what typically works.
