My wife puts water and honey in a blender whips that up into a "milk", adds frozen raspberries until it becomes like a smoothy in consistency. Pours into molds with popsicle sticks and fast freezes in commercial freezer at -15F. Easy peasy.

Humptulips,

Some of the yellow fall raspberries might be lower acid. All will have various acids in their make ups though which is what gives raspberries their flavor profile.

Ours come on in August and we'll into September, my wife makes jam in September.
Cooler weather than.

We planted 3 plants about 25 years ago, now we got them all over along the fence.
Probably about 30 some feet of them.
They sure can spread laugh

how do you get your hands on all these new varieties of berries? First your blue berries and now these.
Do you spray them for SWD?
I had a patch of Canby that died off and I have the soil virus so I can not grow them in the same spot (tried and failed different var. different years). I also have some Chilliwacks that I cannot kill but I have been working on it. I find if I ignore them completely they go out of bounds and up into the yard!

I can’t answer your questions except about spraying. Carl has an organic farm and is always under close scrutiny in regards to any chemical application.

Carl heats up the soil by covering it with dark material and letting the sun heat it. That kills many of the problems.

Went picking today. We eat them fresh and freeze them to put on ice cream and cereal while frozen, and I have a super secret raspberry hand turned ice cream recipe. [Linked Image]

SWD is ALWAYS a big issue. We can use spinosads in organic farming like ENTRUST which are fairly effective but you need to spray with an alternative every other time to avoid them attaining resistance. I haven't found any of the alternatives very effective. We did release some predatory ganaspis wasps and hopefully they will help. We also employ bait stations loaded with a fruity bait and Entrust.

I do pay a lot of attention to what is going on in the berry breeding world. BTW, "Chilliwack", although plagued with crown gall; are/were a favorite cultivar for me. You can't get the plants anymore as far as I know.

And as you said Minz, raspberry root rot (Phytoptera) builds up in a soil and you can never grow raspberries successfully where they once were grown and succumbed to the disease. Most of my farm can no longer grow razz.

(Canby was the first cultivar I ever grew).

Partially correct. Soil solarization works best with 1 mil clear plastic tight to a heavily irrigated patch of soil. WIth clear plastic it can easily heat up to 145F down to 6" Pathogens and weed seeds can be killed at 95F if solarized for an extended period of time.

WIth raspberries there will be fungi that survive the solarization down in the 12-14" range that will come back to bite you. But you might have initial success for a couple of years.

Thanks Carl. Using soil solarization, if I want to clear a new area for a garden, at around 85F, how long does it take to kill plants and seeds down to 6''?

Can I use solarization to kill seeds in soil I am going to use in pots?

Does losing the beneficial life in the soil harm plant growth?

Keith

Beautiful berries. Very jealous. I have Caroline and it has been hit or miss. Used your recommended method of mowing down in the fall. I ran one furrow on both side of the patch, added 17-17-17 and covered heavy in mulch. Never had such a good looking patch. No berries yet but the plants are stellar. We did not have a late frost and are having 95+ degree days.

You said these would not do well in heat. Is there a variety that will do as good as those either early or late pr be extremely heat tolerant?

I use black plastic for killing weeds and seed. I have heard you need to be careful with clear plastic and losing beneficials.

I like blackcaps a lot myself. You may not have ever had a raspberry as tasty as these though. Store-bought razz are terrible.

The first microbes to bounce back are always the beneficials. So no worries there.

Bow, I grew Carolines once but pulled them out as I didn't like the flavor much. I do know a lot of folks grow them though. For fall razz I would suggest Autumn Bliss. I have a friend in Wisconsin that dow well with them. I really like Amity and Jacklyn for fall cultivars but finding plants is sometime hard. I thought I had bought a bunch of Jacklyn plugs from Hartmann Nursery but they ended up being something else and I pulled them out.

The main issue about heat is raspberries get sun scald bad and tend to melt when it gets over 90F By fall through you're probably fine. Keep your plants well hydrated and they'll forgive you on the heat.
