When I worked in TN, there was an area we had that had synchronized lightening bugs; pretty BA.

Pretty amazing really. Nearly 100% pure light energy. No energy wasted on heat.

I mostly call them lightning bugs, but occasionally use fireflies. When I was a kid, some of the comic books used to have ads where they would pay 2 cents a firefly for research.

Grew up in NY where they were fireflies.

Moved to IL where they were lightening bugs.

Moved to MS where they are lightin bugs.

I use all 3 terms these days.

I have heard that someone , could figure out the temperature, by how fast they blinked. Sorry, I don't have the formula. They are fire flies here . old243

I saved one from a bucket of water a few days ago. Must have been floating all nite by the time I found it and realized what it was. It dried out and was on its way.

you can figure out the temperature by counting how many times a cricket chirps in 14 seconds, and then add 40

I grew up calling the lightenin bugs but either name is pretty common here.

When I was a teenager in a dark summer field, with some hellacious primo Kentucky homegrown - I called them "enlightening bugs" Lol.

There was an old ditty about fire flies Glow little glow bug, light of fire, glow like an incdanescent wire. There were more words , but I can;t recall them. old 243

Both, in Asia some places they all light up in unison. Kind of neat looking......jk

80/20 lightening bug around here

Yeah, seems that way. I’ve heard it both ways growing up. Was just wondering. The boys caught a bunch of them the other night.

If you’re not calling it a firefly, at least act like you’ve seen one and spell it correctly. It is “lightning”, not “lightening”

But it has always been a lightning bug to me.

Lightning bug , when we were kids we would catch them .
When we had a jar full , we would squish them and spread them on our forehead, so we would glow !
My mother didn’t like us doing that :-)

Now have them catch a toad then feed it lightning bugs.

I thought it was cool when I did it as a kid, my kids loved it, and so did the grandkids

I call them a firefly. Wife calls them lightning bugs. We have them all over the place here.

It sounds like "lot nin buuuuugs" round these here parts.

"Glow little glow worm, glitter glitter"! Glow worms are the larval female fire flies. Can be observed on the ground, especially along creek gravel bars.

We call them almost extinct in my area. Used to be a bunch.

I'd say 50-50 Firefly-Lightning Bug around here.

I usually go with firefly.

Smeared one on my buddies arm just last week.
