Nice berries. Are they off wild trees or some you planted? We call them Saskatoons also but the wild ones are still small and green here. Usually not ready to pick till late July. They look great. I have them growing wild all around my cabin but bought a few different varieties to plant and see how they grow. Wild ones taste way better in my opinion.

They are wild. I have never tried any other then wild ones. They guy that owns the land these came off of planted some and never picks them. He says they are not as sweet.

People around here tend to think of them as a shrub more so than a tree, it seems.

There are named and cloned cultivars of serviceberries available. Some are supposed to be much better than most wild ones.

Well I was wrong. The ones around the cabin are still green and starting to turn. Went down by the river and a lower elevation and found some that were ready to pick. Not a lot of rain here this year so they are plenty early.

MJM your berries look twice as big as the ones I picked. But they should make some pretty good pies!

That's a pretty good haul, Mark! I have lots on my place, but they're seldom in good enough numbers to make them worth picking. We had a banner year some years back and I loaded up on them. I put a tarp under the bush/tree and collected gobs. I still have 2-3 gallon zip-loc bags full. Like a lot of fruits, they freeze well and don't seem to go bad as soon as some veggies and meat will. It's sorta funny, I spotted a bag full in the freezer when rooting around in there 3-4 days ago, and thought I should make a pie with them soon.
