I don't care for them. I have some of the 220s and they seem to often get tripped and are empty or have hip catches. I know a lot of guys like them though, I just haven't had a good experience.

My experience has been the opposite of Massacs. I've probably only caught fifty or so beaver in the 440s. All but two were hit right behind the head, very little if any signs of a struggle. I've only found one that was snapped without a catch.

I’ve had great experiences with the 160’s, 220’s, 280’s & 330’s and absolutely love those sizes. The 440’s in my experienced opinion are a pos!!!!! The springs on the 440’s are the wrong size so they do NOT lock-up as the other traps sizes do. With the traps unset/fired the jaws will be loose with over an 1” gap!!! It appeared to me that they were “cheap-charlied” or cut corners by putting 330 springs on the larger diameter trap! Yes, you will catch beaver with the 440’s BUT you need to make a textbook hold/strike. Buyer beware, if a trapper uses the 440’s they will have pull-outs!!

I called and spoke with the manufacturer and complained and all he could say was that yes, he’d had a higher percentage of pull-outs with the 440’s as well!
I believe I figured out how to refab the trap’s jaws to make them lock-up with the stock springs that are on the trap but I sold the traps before I got a chance to get after them.

Looking at using them in drain tile for mink.

They’ll work great for that! One thing to remember about RBG’s, the jaws are offset so if you use stabilizers like the KB’s you’ll have to add a piece of 1/4”-5/16” stock on the high jaw side if you want the trap sitting vertical otherwise the trap will sit tilted.

Some years ago I fabricated my own 110 and 160 size BG’s for mink & rats. Loved them! Both sizes fit perfectly in the undercuts beneath bank projections for BE sets.

My 220s have a gap in them like that when they should be locked tight. I'm in otter country and there has been several times where I've had the trap set off, full of grass and debris, and the whole set location all tore up.

Honestly didn't pay much mind to it until you wrote your reply and posted that pic

I have a few of the first ones Bill Crum made. Can be a pain to set but they kill quick.

I like the 280's, we can have an 8" round trap on dry ground here or a 7.5 square 220. I love them for otter crossovers, and they kill beaver very well.
