This is what happens when any type of storm or even just a little wind comes through our area.

On average, we have a major outage about once a month.

My power went out more when I lived in Dayton, than it does here out in the middle of nowhere. I bought a brand new generator to use for power outages, when we bought the farm back in 2012. I've never had to use it. I think my power hasn't gone out more than 3 times in 13 years and never for more than a little over an hour.

We're pretty lucky here considering how our roads are lined with trees, our power doesn't go out much.

My camp is in a rural area of Potter County in north-central PA. There are no paved roads, only dirt roads through woods. I am the last stop for electric. The three camps in the valley below me run on natural gas and generators.

My electrical service is provided by a small, three-county electrical cooperative. They are on the ball. The get out and do the maintenance and outages are rare. When we do have one it's fixed fast and their communication is great.

In contrast, twenty-some years ago First Energy bought out all the smaller electric companies around my home in southeast PA. They immediately stopped doing line maintenance. It took 10-15 years but we are paying the price for that lack of maintenance now.

The giant conglomerate First Energy could learn a lot about maintenance and customer service from the tiny REC (Rural Electric Cooperative) that powers my camp. If they cared too...

Makes you wonder what's the use of having a Public Utility Commission.

We have PP&L but like where your camp is, there's always tree trimming going on here either by them or our township. They're right on it if it does go out too.

I've had more outages this year than in years past. And I didn't even lose power when Helene went through. Makes on wonder. The only thing different this year is record rainfall with localized afternoon thunderstorms almost daily.

The county next to me here at home has PP & L hippie. I manage some apartments over there and they are light years ahead of First Energy in terms of maintenance and customer service.

Most of the electrical grid here in my neck of the woods is brand new.....thanks to Hurricane Helene.

Many of the trees that could fall on the lines are now gone too.

a significant part of the country is operating on fix it as it breaks and not do any preventative maintenance or very very minimal maintenance.

because when you can blame the storm for the outage , then all the linemen are hero's and you can call in all the neighboring area linemen for the assist.

where if they are chopping down your favorite tree to keep it from going over on the line in the next breeze. they are the bad guys.

oh we had to spend X on the emergency , rather than regular maintenance that might cost as much or more.

a lot of the bridges in this country aren't much better they inspect them and you will see reduced weight loads or if really bad closed and replaced the next year.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I kind of wonder if Georgia Power has had to put so much into new equipment that other areas like mine hasn't gotten the maintenance it needs?

Like I said in past years we rarely had an outage. There was the tornado in 11 and one of the Hurricanes before Helene but from regular weather rare. This year we've lost power made half a dozen times.

In my area, tree trimmers, mostly Nelson's, are constantly cutting trees back from the lines before they can cause a problem. I got close to 40 loads of arborist chips dumped here by them last year.

I had 60 some telephone poles dropped off here too. Most looked nearly new. The power company seems to be replacing poles near me all the time.

That maintenance is why my power here is very reliable.

Snow removal here is great too. So is road maintenance. Everything is handled way better than when I lived in town.

I think the main difference is the workers are local, have family here and actually care.

As of this morning, there are still over 6,700 people out of power in my area. This is the standard statement Met-Ed/First Energy issues:

[Linked Image]

FYI, on the pic above I clicked on just one outage to see what Met-Ed is up to. There are currently more than 6,700 households out of power, not just 916.

It’s been 14 hours since the thunderstorm came through and Met-Ed is still talking about about severe weather causing outages and won’t give an estimated time of restoration. Most of these folks will be out of power for at least 24 hours, a lot of them will be out for upwards of 48 hours or more.

I have no problem with the linemen doing the repairs. They are hard-working folks that do a dangerous job at all hours of the day and night and in all weather.

It’s the company they work for but I have a problem with. Met-Ed/First Energy sucks.

Eh...wot?

We got lucky this time around. The power went off and on a few times then went off and stayed off. I shut off the main breaker and went out to fire up the genny. While I was topping it off with gas I sent my granddaughter up to check the meter and she told me it was on (power restored).

Only a twenty minute outage for me this time.
