Have lived by a RR track all my life, and remember as a kid seeing the end of the hobo's in the late 1960's. ...Had more respect for them over most of today's homeless.
When I was a kid, my paternal, maternal, great grandfather taught me about hobos and showed me some of the old pictograph signs they had put on fences and buildings in his neighborhood. There were pictographs of a dog with big teeth, pies, a woman in a triangle dress, and chickens. Around the same time I read "No Promises Before the Wind" by Irene Hunt about two brothers, who during the Great Depression took to the rails with a friend of theirs as hobos. Keith

Keith You bet they networked, my great grandmother's front porch was a regular stop where they got leftover biscuits and fried chicken on Sundays....Hobo's for many miles around knew Gracie Penola "Nola" One morning my great grandfather David "Pap" was up early to shovel feed into a wagon when the first shovel throw made a muted sound....Pap looks over and sees a hobo bedded down in the wagon, Lol. Those hobo's would sleep in the barns, tool sheds, etc. and never harmed any of the locals.

Negative Vinke. Worked hard, lived hard. Was honest and fair with everyone. Might have hurt a few, meh…. Never homeless. Don’t look down on those who are. They are dealing with something I never have. One of my dead 6, ran away from home at the age of 14 because his dad was a ,,,,,,,,, He lived in cars at the junkyard with his brother. Rod did well for himself… He was 20 years older then me, and one of the 3 people that showed me how to work

Not ever homeless. But I started hitchhiking all over the State of Washington at 14. Marten trapping near the ski areas; it was always easy to get a ride wirh skiers, hunting, exploring old mines in Eastern Washington, etc.. I loved it. It's really sad tgat kids nowadays are discouraged from an adventurous life.

I met a guy out in LA had a karate suit on but the sleeves and pants were full length. Wanted me to go up to big sur with him. Was taking mushrooms so he could see through his third eye into the other reality. I declined. The big sur commune and the mushrooms.
After boot camp I took ten days leave then flew to Chicago. Was going to school at Chanute Air Force base. Near Rantoul. A Hare Krishna approached me at O hare and wanted to give me a book. I took it and he then said you have to give me twenty dollars. I refused and tried to give him his book back. He kept saying no he had to have twenty dollars. I was in my dress uniform and had my duffle bag with all the stuff you stuff in one. Pretty heavy. When he stuck his hand in my pocket I stepped back a bit and hit him with that duffle bag. He fell on his rear and I threw his book at him. Airport cop came running over and I said he needs to keep his hands out of my pockets. Cop told me to git and I did.

Yes and no. I went on a bender and lost my keys. Technically, I did have a house but I just couldn't get in it for a few days.
I have nothing clever to put here.

Only time was when we sold our house and had to wait a month before we could move into the new one. Had to live with the in-laws. Great folks but hope to never have to do that again.

I did live in a room in our hog barn during high school. We had sold our house and dad was building a new one on another part of the farm. Those were good times living in the barn.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

used to hitch hike as a kid all the time. One time we were in the creek catching crayfish. Got all muddy and wet. Hitch hiked home. We got picked up by our babysitter, made the car into a stinky wet mess.
