Interesting short 4:53 video.

That sure is a great example of ingenuity at work. That is when men were men and good craftsmen.

This came up on my YouTube feed a few days ago, probably because I watch a lot of woodturning videos. It's an interested video especially when contrasted with modern methods.

I thought my spindle roughing gouge was big! grin

Those few catches the woodturner got were probably whizzing of his "motors."

Eh...wot?

That's probably green wood. It's much easier to shape manually.

Back around 2000, I got to use a spring pole and foot treadle powered wood lathe. The design was used at least as far back as the 1600s. I turned green wood, nowhere near that big. When turning green wood, you have to turn more pieces than you need, because some will split bad!y enough during drying, that you can't use them.

I'm pretty sure it was green. I could see wetness around the center hole he was boring.

Eh...wot?

I don't like turning green. A lot of guys turn bowls green because everything turns easier when green. Then they set them to dry for a year or however long it takes them to dry down to 8-12% MC and turn them again because they warp and check as they dry.

I turn dry stuff, once and done.

Eh...wot?

Seems like a lot of work to make a baseball bat!

Seriously, a lot of ingenuity there.
