I know folks that get a new pup within a month of losing one. It usually takes me at least a year to get over the loss and move on.
I have considered getting a new puppy while the old timers are still around, but am leery of hurting their feelings. lol

I try to get a pup when the older ones start slowing down. Seems to make everything easier. For me anyway.

I think you should get a new dog about every 6 to 7 years. The older dog can help train the younger one. The younger dog often revitalizes the older dog. The pain of the inevitable loss is of the old dog is lessened by the presence of the young one.

We got a new pup about a year before I had to put the oldest girl down. One was not bothered the other dod is a jealous dog. Both did ok with it and I think it's the way to go. I don't think I could live in a house without a dog to greet me when I get home. OK so I could but would never choose to.

I wouldn't wait. It'll help you get over the loss of the last one faster. You'll be so busy with the puppy. Dog is man's best friend.

I’ve been training battle buddies for 20yrs now and this is essentially my rule for personal dogs. I use the 5yr rule but it’s so helpful to have the pack help you train, especially with the breed/mix I work worth. Attentive dogs are too much maintenance alone and a well trained dog is the best trainer.

I lost 2 Beagles to Parvo, and Vet said the virus can live in the environment for up to a year, so I waited 1 1/2 yrs before I got another. A very LOOOONG 1 1/2 yrs.
I lost a short male Beagle and I had the Female in the house for company and consolation, and for about 2 weeks, when I'd let her out, she'd go out in the middle of the yard and "Berk" for him. Tore me up.
Have 2 Hounds now, with 10 buried in the Yard. Never easy.

New pup just turned 6 months old here this week I forgot how much work a pup could be so consider that. The Wife’s dog is about 2 years old now having the 2 dogs is great for them they get along great and keep themselves active I don’t have as much time to entertain them all day so it’s perfect.

New pup will learn from the older dogs making your job easier training wise I would think. Also a little activity won’t hurt your older dogs they should be able to regulate an over zealous puppy to keep it in check.

My biggest fear is what will happen to my pup when I’m gone since I’m out of warranty now at my age.

life is too short to wait any arbitrary time limit

tomorrow is no guarantee , live today

getting a dog while the old one is still around unless your old dog has issues where they would be aggressive with the pup go ahead your new pup might even learn how to act from your current dog.

if your raising a good dog with good friends I bet some one will take your dog , we are all out of our warranty , no warranty was ever given, The doctor slapped your but got you screaming to get some air in your lungs and handed you over to your mother warrantee already expired.
even with a good physical and clean bill of health in mid November you can find out you have cancer at 46 and live 6 more months and pass in early July.

and if no friend is able to take your dog there are plenty of places that you can line up pet rescues that find good homes for them. they may not be the home you would give them but they will be well cared for.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

As a bird hunter I can't go without a dog, so I usually have two and sometimes three. Usually a couple spaced out by 3 or 4 years then when there's one of the old timers left, get a pup. I don't think it hurts their feelings, as long as you're still giving normal amount of attention to the old timer.

Took quite a while this last one.
When I did start looking the price
is out of budget so went from looking
to watching for one.
I should start producing them.

At least go to the pound and see if one speaks to you. You are a caring dog owner. A dog needs you. You need a dog.

Stop wasting time.
