I'm the only outdoorsman in my family, so everything I do is self taught, some is totally wrong by all accounts, but it works for me!

I learned to fish with an old (late 1960's) Zebco 303. I would cast with the RH, switch hands while the bait is in the air, and crank RH. When I got older and wanted to upgrade, This was well before they started to make them with switchable handles, so I had to special order a LH reel so I could use it like I was used to.

How do all of you do it?

I started with Mitchell 300 and 400s and still do use them half of the time. the modern ones are all different and parts don't match and they are not available everywhere. I have so many mitchells that I don't need parts, just swap it the reel and fix it when I get home. There are much better reels out there but that is what I am used to. For you, find one you like and stick with it. You have a lot of choices now a days.....jk

Spinning reels vs spincast.

I don't switch hands with spinners even though almost all modern spinners can swap the handle left or right. Just the way I learned it. Reel handle between the fingers of the right, hook the line with right index, flip bail with left, cast, flip bail with left and reel with left.

Spincast and baitcasting. Cast with right, swap hands cupping reel with left and reeling with right. Even though many spincaster handles are also swappable.

Just how I learned it.

I still have my old Shakespeare spin casting reel I bought when I was 12 (still works) but I’d already learned using my dad’s old SS bait-caster to cast RH, switch hands and reel RH’d and still do today. That being said, when I started using spinning reels I cast RH and no problem reeling LH. In fact, I’ve got that old reel of mine out on the garage sale table as I write this. [Linked Image]

I'm right handed cast with my right but spinning or bait casting reels I want the reel handle on the left. No need switching hands.

I am right handed and cast with right hand and reel with left. Never take right hand off rod. With my bait casters, most are right hand reel so I do change hands after casting. I do have some left hand reel that I use during certain applications.!

I do it this way also, just how I'm comfortable using them

Warrior mentioned “ swap hands cupping reel with left” and this just seems to come naturally to people I think. Here’s an old Johnson spin-caster I have where with my large hands the push button was too large & too close to the edge to allow my hand to cup it so cut the push button narrower.

Break your stubborn ways and quit switching hands.

I taught myself to use a LH bait caster. That way I can set the hook and reel without switching hands. This is for ocean fishing, mostly flounder or sea bass over structure in 50-110 ft water

I can't use a bait caster. I am too impatient to learn not to tangle them on every cast. I use a spinner reel and put the crank on the wrong side. Cast with right hand (strong hand) and reel it in with my left. I know I fish wrong but it works for me.

Baitcasters are for those who can put up with fine tuning for each lure used.

As I fish with a tiller outboard I really like spin reels with bail triggers so I can cast with one hand. Some don’t that they aren’t instant anti reverse but I just hook line with my index to stop line slip when setting the hook solidly.

That's how I do it, I thought that's how every right-hander did it.
