When ya get one hired you should start a tradition. Whenever someone shoots a bear, you roll into camp and yell “SKINNER” at the top of your lungs. Like the old mule skinner song.

Skinned a few bear years ago, full body mount, paws and all were saved for the mount. It's a little different than skinning for fur. A taxidermy skin job is what you're looking for. Been 40 years since I skinned my last one. If I was 40 years younger, I'd go for it.

Believe it or not this Iowa kid used to plan his Canadian vacation around bear hunting in Ontario. Used to help skin the bears. Boy did I love it. Not an easy job for sure.

I've skinned plenty of them, not a tough job at all. If you are just skinning them and leaving the feet on. But I suspect by skinner, Bernie is looking for someone not only to peel the hide off them, but to completely skin out the feet, flesh them, turn ears and lips and get them on salt.
I guide for bear and it is considered my job to skin them, but that is just peeling off the hide, leaving the feet in it. I generally always skin out the head, but that is optional. If I skin out the head the hide can go in the freezer immediately and the head can stay out to be unthawed for them to pull a tooth when they check it and seal the hide. Fifteen minutes to skin one hanging that way probably, I've never timed it, a bit more doing it on the ground, but not too much, just a dirtier hide if you have to quarter it in the woods.

My skinner takes off the skin and puts it in the freezer, then takes off the hind quarters, shoulders and loins and puts them in the freezer. Also pulls the tooth. I pay for it as part of the hunt. If the hunter wants it skinned for taxidermy, such as the head and feet, the skinner can determine if he's willing to do it and how much extra he will charge the hunter.

So all he’s gotta do is peel the skin off, head and paws left on for the hunters chosen taxidermist……or skin taxi if the client chooses? Plus quarter the meat and pull a tooth? Shouldn’t be hard to find help to do that. On the other hand, a buddy of mine hired a new licensed guide 2 springs ago, mid 20s. He told him to load up the trailer and restock baits 25-50 or whatever. New employee says…… “I’m the GUIDE! Not the helper.” He was then told to leave as he was useless if he didn’t want to work…….lol

I can't say I ever thought skinning or fleshing a bear was hard. I have skinned and fleshed both blacks and grizzlies. I used to also flesh bears for a taxidermist in Gt Falls MT when I lived over there. He ask if I would teach him how I fleshed since the bears I fleshed were cleaner then his. I think anyone who has put up any amount of fur could do a bear.

Guides ain’t what they used to be. I used to cook too. I’d rather be taxi skinning bears than cook. Taxidermist s loved me. They got paid for my work. Unfortunately, my professionalism would not allow me to freeze bear meat right away with the fat on. This does not result in the best product.
