What would the price difference be between put up and fleshed and frozen?

Beav, you & I have sold fur for decades & decades and there always seems to be those same “unanswerable” fur-buyer questions!

Pretty easy to compute. Look at the FHA prices.

You folks with a bunch of skunks better get while the getting is good.
My guess is this won't last long. It is for sure a limited specialty market that will be satisfied soon.
Ive caught less than 20 in the past 30 years...so, Im out.....lol

Sleepy Creek will tan a tail for $10.00. But It's going to take 3 or 4 months to get your tails back. So, you just might miss out.
But an august tail from ADC work or a roadkill with lots of long hair and lots of white and getting it tanned just might get you $60.00. Well $50.00. With groney getting into the skunk market that just might prolong those higher prices for a while. But even at $30.00 it would be better then $8.00 coon and $2.00 rats and $5.00 coyotes. Then add in the essence and the pods and the fat and the skulls you would be in hog heaven.

There’s gotta be guys buying them in the whole for the trappers that don’t want to deal with them? What would the price difference be between put up and fleshed and frozen?
Between $2 & $60…..lol. 1000 at the March auction, 2000 at the June auction……next March could be interesting, maybe GFW will have filled the buyers needs by then? How many Jews are getting married anyways? It’s a secret and I’m not telling. I just bought out all the tanned skunks up here for an average of $65CAD……..lol

Well talking to some people, they are using the tails on hats. And that isn't skunk hats. So, I'm not sure what they do with a skunk hide with the tail intact. Do they cut off the tail after dressing then use it on some other type of hat. I also heard that the tails were being used in fishing lures. But the people I talked to didn't seem to think that was the case.
I thought that Jewish men were into grey fox hats. Anyway, I heard that somewhere.
Long live the skunk market.

Skunks were abundant here up to a few years ago when the froze out one spring. Heck before that getting 100 was easy now you don’t see much roadkill, I went from several calls a week to a couple calls a month now. Just my luck ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/07/full-18408-264715-img_2529.jpeg)

Caught 14 under one shed last January tossed them all . Groeny told me in March he would have gave me 10 each put up , not worth it to me and yes I’ve put up plenty in the past. That was more skunks than I have caught in the last 10 years combined It makes it even more apparent that this market came up suddenly out of nowhere. I guess June FHA woke up a bunch of folks.

With Groenewold showing interest I'm thinking the market may have more depth than I originally thought. I was told by a reputable sorce GWF has been in the market buying skunks for a bit.Now the market is aware of the price and he have to step up to buy them. Pretty easy to compute. Look at the FHA prices. No it's not because there was more profit tacked on top plus sale fees. If you know what the out the door price is to the main buyer please enlighten us.

Can u still smell skunk after the tan process? Depends on who did the tanning. Also depends how sensitive the nose is of who is doing the smelling. Some folks have a nose connected to their eyes - they see a skunk and automatically smell skunk! LOL

Far be it from a fur buyer to bend the truth now and again. It's a very select market so you have to be careful what you say and do. Maybe they did not buy directly themselves but used a broker. That way they could say they were not involved. Like I said before they have been in the skunk market for a bit. The reason for the upward price change is because of competition.

Best skunk set I’ve found is a brand new trap, your best constructed time consuming set and an expensive lure. Seems they find it before anything else every single time. lol.

Saw a beautiful mostly white roadkill on the shoulder today. If it was October I may have stopped and at least looked at him. Hopefully I’ll decide discretion is the better part of valor by fall. Be interesting to see how long the demand at 30 plus dollars continues. Or in other words how long before trappers overproduce? Might be surprising how many may just target them. How many the Jews need I’m guessing no one has a clue about?

I wonder how soon skunk skins are good enough for the current tail market? It seems to me that by early fall they at least look kind of nice from the outside. Haven't bothered to look up close at a September skunk.
