Drifter and I went to the FTA convention last weekend. On the way home, we took a little detour to check out a museum -- The Homestead National Historical Park. I'd heard a rumor that there was an exhibit there in honor of one of our very own Tman admins, and since it wasn't too far out of our way, we thought we'd swing by and check it out.

For those that don't know, white17...aka Ken Deardorff, was the very last American to be granted a deed to a homestead under the Homestead Act of 1862. The Homestead Monument in Beatrice Nebraska has an exhibit commemorating it.

When you walk into the main entrance, the first thing you see is Ken's old Allis-Chalmers tractor. They actually airlifted it out of the Alaskan wilderness with a helicopter.

[Linked Image]

They even have the tractor on a t-shirt they're selling in the gift shop.

[Linked Image]

The rest of Ken's exhibit is in the museum portion of the building, along with other exhibits. There isn't really much need for commentary, as I think the pics will tell the story. If you have any questions and ask nicely, Ken may even answer them. smile

So anyways, just thought I would share with y'all (OK, so maybe Paul kinda twisted my arm to make this post smile ) But it was pretty cool to see all the exhibits there, ranging from the first homesteaders, to the last, and especially cool because the last one was one of our own Tman administrators.

An amazing man. He was the first to install running water in his cabin , if I recall correctly. He was for working smarter, not harder , if he didn't have to.

Very proud of him.

Glad you got the chance to visit there, Angela.

That is super cool. I was involved in flying a tractor out of the Wilderness in Idaho in 92 and that is no easy feat. I would give the left half of my manhood to own that Model 70 too just because of it's history.

I have nothing clever to put here.

It is a post 64 model 70 in a magnum caliber based on the factory red recoil pad.

The rifle is a 7mm mag.

I don't think I can tell my best adventure story on here but one of the very best was being present when my daughter was born. That was pretty amazing. Another was driving my bulldozer cross country for a week in February to get it to my homestead from the old DEW line site where it was flown in to. That was a neat little trip.

Looks like Drifter and Yotetrapper got the nickle tour.

Well It was pretty much like any other road trip I guess.
That old wheel tractor just wasn't up to the task so I bought an old International T340 dozer. There was an old air force radar site about 70 miles from my cabin. I had the dozer flown in there in an even older C-119 Flying Boxcar.

I drove it from there cross country to my cabin. Took 7 or 8 days breaking my own trail and just camping wherever darkness caught up with me. Some of the crick crossings kinda got my blood pumping as did one large lake.

Crossing that lake I put the thing in 3rd gear and set the throttle......and then jumped off. It was about a mile across the lake. I snowshoed along behind. When the blade hit the bank on the other side it killed the engine. Worked like a charm. I wasn't wild about the idea of riding that thing to the bottom of that lake.

Pretty handy thing to have when making a camp in the evening. Drop the blade and make a flat spot....drag in some dead logs for a fire and I had a cozy camp.

As I started reading this, my first thought was there was no way I would be riding that thing across a lake. Nice "work around" setting the throttle and an even better story. THANK YOU for sharing!

In all honesty I've always hoped that Ken and Ole Blister would write a book about their lives .

Ken is the real deal and I honestly can say I enjoy his sense of humor too !

Since Pete wrote a book highlighting some of his life's adventures , I'm surprised that ken hasn't both I feel would be well received if given the chance .

If you haven’t already, you really should write a book Ken.

The story you posted here many years ago about the inside passage along the west coast was fantastic. I remember printing it out and reading it to my family who also enjoyed it.

If I recall correctly, years later I urged you to post it here once again and you did.

Based on that one story, I can tell that you have an excellent writing style and any book you might want to publish would be at the top of my “to buy” list.

Eh...wot?

Yes she is. She and I are in touch occasionally. She was a nurse at the same field hospital where I was a patient, but we did not overlap in the same time frame. We just discovered each other in the last 18 months

Her part of the family was from Gettysburg as was my paternal grandfather.

LOL! The first thing I thought when I walked in there was my God, I know white's older than dirt, but this tractor looks even older than that.
