Ok I caught him at Maraemc Springs this morning on a rooster tail brown trout color. He was 22 1/2" long. Try and guess the weight of him, I did get a lunker patch.
There was no one around to take a good picture of me holding him so I took the best selfie that I could. Not a big deal but I would have liked to had 1 good picture of me holding him up.

Its not a size thing, Its a pattern of how they live/go thru their life cycles.

Some say (those from the Pacific N.W.) its only a steelhead when they drop down to the ocean after being spawned in the freshwater. Kinda like a Salmon.

Around here (Great lakes) they say its all genetics. We stole some rainbows (steelhead) from the pacific northwest where they travel as previously mentioned.
Here they are spawned in the rivers/small brooks and creeks and drop down to one of the great lakes where they gorge on all the food.
When spawning in the spring or following spawning salmon in the fall for food they will travel back up the rivers.

Generally steelhead are larger than resident rainbows that stay in one river all their lives. Altho I have seen some resident rainbows out of the St Marys river that were large.

Around here your typical steelhead is about 20-25". Largest Iv'e seen is about 30"
Brown trout, especially the seaforellen type get to be around the 30lb range, 35-40" long.
Biggest I caught was a 36" in a medium sized river that feeds lake Michigan.

If you want to catch big trout fish the great lakes tributaries.

Hatchery raised. They will either get those rubbed off in the concrete runs or possibly nipped off by other trout.
