and you are told you need to re-torque in 50-100 miles

that is kinda important

I helped someone with brakes 20 days and about 600 miles ago and left them with the you need to re-torque those lugs in 50-100

they said today that it started acting like it had warped rotors , well when I got in and didn't even get get out of the drive way on the test drive and I noticed the brake was hanging up had to give it gas to start rolling and when I let off gas it slowed down right away.

missing 1 of the 6 lug nuts on the passenger side , the rest not a lot more than finger tight
Drivers side you could have spun them off with a stubby ratchet

they all clicked on the torque wrench 20 days ago and they got real busy and forgot to hit them all in a couple days.

luckily it only cost a lug nut and some time to let the brakes cool off dismount the wheels , check the rotors and re-torque everything

Modern cars with alloy wheels it is very important to torque them when installing. And doing it again as things settle in place. These are not the same as 'steelies' , OEM steel wheels from older cars. Alloy needs proper torquing and checking it again as things settle in place.

100% agree with GREENCOUNTYPETE , good informative post for all.

Lucky the wheel didn't come off, or holes get turned into ovals. I lost a back tire on my Sr 5 with steel wheels once at about 45. Never did figure out if it was someone mad or why they got loose. Nothing like you back wnd dropping line of sparks in the mirrors and your tire bouncing down the road past you.

have an uncle who didn't take this warning serios a few years ago , rear wheel came off while towing his camper

also around 600-1000 miles post getting new tires cost him a new rim , a tire , lug nuts and spending the weekend in the camper at the tire shop parking lot after getting towed in

much less expensive to just check torque in a hundred miles.

my aunt's husband , nice guy but not the most mechanical.

this just reminded me , I got my aunt new tires and brakes about a month ago , she bought I just facilitated at my local shop.

that is the same uncle that didn't check torque on his SUV , just texted her a reminder.

Make them tighter to start.

Being in the garage business, they either stay tight or you got mad customers at best if wheels start coming loose. 9 outta 10 customers bring their car to us because they can't even check the air in them. Its our responsibility that their wheels don't fall off after the leave.

In a perfect world, you're right........but!

Had a set of aftermarkets on my 98 f150. They had been torqued and checked, rechecked several times. About abyear later had a few come off, one stud was broke off, the others bent. Luckily the wheel didnt fall off. I think someone may have messed with them, but no proof. all the other wheels checked out good.
